IR Filter

Hi guys, i just bought a Hoya R72 IR filter for my 58mm kit lens.

Kinda new to IR photography so im not exactly sure how it works. Could someone explain how to use the filter properly?

I know im supposed to expose the shot for a long time before i can get any pictures but the pics that appear all have a strong red cast. I thought IR filters supposed to make the trees and leaves blue-ish or whit-ish?

And i cant see through the viewfinder cuz after i put the filter all becme black!

I admire your decision to buy the filter before knowing its use. No offence, I know nuts about IR too.... and I think the recommended thread is very useful
