how many here actually make regular short trips to hongkong or taipei etc to take advantage of the cheaper equipment there and buy back for personal use or buy for friends and relatives?

i am thinking of doing such a thing after i ORD, flying off to HK for 2 D 1N to buy cheaper stuffs there and for some food before coming back home.

opinions?

for the short trip and big savings in certain stuffs, why not?

one way is to buy a cheaper tiger airways to shenzhen or macau, then take the mtr (SZ-HK) or ferry (Macau-HK) for a day trip to buy/buy/buy and then go back to shenzhen/macau, spend one nite, then come back singapore..haha....but then, need to make sure that there are stocks available at the shops, otherwise come back empty handed....

it will be cheap if you are buying many things at a go and if you managed to get the cheap airfare. But I think 2d1n may be a bit short if unless you really know where exactly to go and what to buy. If you intend to shop and browse around, I think it's a bit too short.

I don't think it's pratical to fly to SZ or Mac and come over to HK as too much time will be spent travelling. Unless you are very familiar with the transport systems on all ends, you will lose time figuring out where to go. Although the travel to and fro the airport and accomdation in HK may be higher, I think time is a higher priority on your list

In addition, the bus trip to SZ and Macau may be 24hrs, you will still have to foot the bus/ferry to and for, which will make the money you may save on the accomdation redundant. If you are sticking to your 2d1n plans, your second day will not be productive as there will be too much travelling time.
