Somehow General Arthur Percival also think they have superior number. Only ignorant British commander can assume all these misinformations, which lead to sunking of Z force to letting the Japanese landing in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia to not using tanks on the battlefront and of course surrendering to lesser force that running out of supply. :sweat:
Actually, the British forces wanted to implement Ops Matador a plan involving engaging the Japanese in Thailand which was neutral at that time. That was shelved as doing so would infringe on the sovereignty of Thailand.

The 3rd Div Imperial Army was far smaller in size compared to the Commonwealth Forces but their morale ran so high, their unity was so strong and coupled with an extremely powerful faith (thanks to the politicians in the Diet) overwhelmed the Commonwealth Forces.
There's nothing more powerful in a war than morale, faith and spirit. And most of the Japanese troops I believe, had these teachings of 'service to the Emperor' innoculated since young. Such things dun happen overnight.

Been to Omaha Beaches, Normandy in Oct 1998. Also been to Le Harve and Dieppe (same year)where I think is where the Canadian forces landed.

if only, they went in and capture the coasts of southern thailand and maybe even proceed to take some of indochina, i am sure the japs will retreat for a while, becos they cannot move far without those airbases in indochina.
Force Z ; battleship Prince of Wales, battlecruiser Repulse, and the four destroyers HMS Electra, HMS Express, HMS Encounter, and HMS Jupiter, arrived at Singapore on 2 December, 1941. The new carrier, Indomitable was allocated to Force Z but she had run aground in the entrance to Kingston harbour on November 3, 1941.
If only, Indomitable was with them at south china sea, situation might change.. :think:

Just watch Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Just can't accept the fact what the Japs had done, but really admire their curage in defending the pork chop-like island.

I jus watched "Flags & Letters" too. I must say "Letters" certainly deserved its win at Golden Globe, for Best Foreign Film. Eastwood did a fabulous job. The crew actually film the "landing scenes" for the movie in Iceland.
