Giving up Photography completely

maybe.. just be a PNS user.. sell your gear and get a F20 or 30...

Maybe u have been aiming too high a standard that u cannot reach?

if the goals are unreachable it is very disheartening when u cannot produce the art.

have u asked yourself why u pick up photography in the first place? to me, photography is a nature thing bcos everywhere around us are actually photos uncaptured in CCD :p

looking at your past post about magnum opus etc... wondering if u are pushing yourself too hard? or looking at other's photos dishearten u?

actually hor, photography is for yourself ... it's a hobby. Just enjoy. :)

dun think too much. it seems that from your past posts, u are a deep thinker....life is very short, dun be too hard on yourself.

recently, i have a friend who just committed suicide. he died. he is around my age ( 30s ). I was very very very sad. For quite sometime I haven't been talking to him. Just heard that he was stressful in work in the last few months.... Then suddenly heard that he died. I was really very shocked. though i knew that life is unpredictable and anything can happen. I can even die of heart attack before i can click Submit Reply! I still find it hard to accept this is a fact ...

so... i am off topic too far. what i am saying is dun think too much.

enjoy and treasure what we've , every minute of our life, with our parents, frens, colleagues etc...

CYRN: After so long, photography doesn't feel so much like a hobby for me like it was in the past. But I'm looking it more like an Art Form nowadays. Still, some things in life now are probably more important than philosophical thoughts now. :)

Dreams will still be there though.

Well... survival is first instinct. Photography for many, are just self-fulfilling.

I do have that give up feeling too JSBN. Especially after when I took tons of pictures but none can make it. Smetimes I do think that what I did was so lousy that I don't have much of a talent in this hobby like my friends do. (I don't have the talent anyway).

I like to shoot portraits but usually I cannot find any good model to shoot. Pay to shoot a model but no $$$. Stuck with a kit Lens and No $$$ to upgrade. Because of my lousy skills, I never dare to show off my pictures (Self Inferior Complex). Sometimes really feel like leaving the camera on the shelf to collect dust forever.

However, I was asked this question. What is my purpose in photography? If I'm thinking of shooting to achieve fame, I should quit becos I'm not doing a good job. If I'm doing it for passion, I should go back and look at what I have shot.

I did go back and look at the pictures I took. It's not wonderful but each picture is a beautiful memory. I just want the pictures to be a part of my memory. Good memory or bad. Of course maybe out of a hundred pictures, I do find one that's not bad. Really made me want to try for more.

Maybe you are at your low period right now. Maybe you like to take a look at your previous works too. Only you can walk this road and choose your own path. Wish you all the best in watever path you choose. Good Luck and best wishes.

actually hor, every shutter we click, tho we find the photos cannot make it, but it is NOT wasted.

every shutter we clicked, it is one shutter nearer to our goal

Haha. Indeed. Each click is really a different experience.

Jsbn,

We all go through different phases in life, and sometimes, for whatever reason, different things take priority, by choice or necessity.

Like someone mentioned, sell off all your gear (assuming digital) as it would seriously depreciate over time. Do what you feel is necessary, and when you feel ready again, there will be a new adventure, both in equipment, as well as the way you view things (which may or may not affect your work) waiting for you.

There's nothing wrong with walking away if you feel the need to. In fact, you might be better for it.

CHEER UP! Sandpaper is rough, but leaves a smooth, polished finish after it's work is done.

Yes, 15 years ago I sold all my gears and gave up photography completely. But I pick it up again last year...

Me same here. Lost my whole Nikon set in 1992 so i gave up photography till 2005 when i got myself a Canon DSLR. Canon for 2 reason, one is to forget about the painful lost of my Nikon so I cant buy Nikon for that reason. 2nd is becos almost all my friends use Canon at that time.

Give photography a rest for a while but come back when you had solved yr other problems (I really dont know what they are) Yr Photography skill will never be lost.

Take care.

if u sell your gear, remember to come back to CS and pick up photography in 2015  I'll be here :embrass:

Are you sure you are able to give up? I don't think so. When you sleep, the finger that presses the button will still twitch. You will still see everything in rectangular frames. The spell is there.

Perhaps this might be a little 'too serious' for kopitiam.

But have u guys wondered abt giving up photography? I mean completely give up due to something (maybe due to emotional circumstances).

I'm thinking of it right now, immediately. Selling my DSLR and not touching photography (or even thinking abt the Art), forever.

it's a personal thing, if you've decided just do it

DSLR sell already can buy again. you can't buy passion.

me too, just pick up again in 2004 nov
do what you need to do first,
your passion will always be there
waiting to be rediscovered

If you want to give up something, do it with conviction. Dun do it half heartedly and "wondered abt" or "thinking of it right now".

Same as with any passion vice versa if you are keeping any hobbies or goals.

However, if you are in for some other reason , but not related to photography, then take a break from it instead.

You oledi mentioned you are giving up due to emotional circusmtances.

Once the dark skies are clear....you will regret you sold your DSLR.
or
maybe not...you will give yourself reasons to buy new DSLR!!!!

BUY! BUY! BUY!

;) ;)

Indeed.
Don't give yourself unnecessary stress.

Live life to the fullest.

:blah: :gbounce: :blah:

well, if you want to give it uyp, do it.

Very hard for us to give any advise without knowing the underlying reason.

Forever is a very long time. I did give it up for 5+ years once. Came back with a vengence.

So, do whatever you feel it's the right thing to do. If you want help, need to tell us more.

PM me if you dont want it in the open.

whenever i look back at the photos from 20 years ago, i wondered why my parents don't take more photos? :)
Even if the photos are unable to give someone instant gratification, I am sure a long time down the road, people will find some value in every photos that had been shot, be it a poorly composed photo or badly exposed shots
even with a PNS camera, you still can shoot alot of value photos
