Shooting in snow

I'm leaving for a 3 week holiday to Colorado Springs next month. I'm bringing my D70s along with me. I have 2 questions...

1st : Is there anything in particular that I need to know about taking care of my camera in
a cold country? It will be snowing in Colorado Springs.

2nd : Due to the fact that it is snowing and there will be lots of "white" around and snow
reflects the sun really well, how to go about shooting good photos?

not really qualified to answer the first question cos I've never been to anywhere that snows..
but I do know that you need to have + exposure compensation when shooting snow.. cos the reflection off the snow would "fool" the metering...

Get an ND filter and Polarizers. On a clear bright sunny day, these will come in very useful especially when you wanna use fill flash or wanna do some nice waterfall pics or something. Once I could only go down to 1/30 on a bright sunny day with my aperture stopped down to f22 at ISO 200 without any filters, which is still too fast to take nice "silky" waterfall shots. And the effects of a polarizer on a clear sunny morning or evening are wonderful, something which you will never get in Singapore.

And yeah, like what J-Chan mentioned, have +ve EC when shooting in snow, maybe 1 stop to 2 stop compensation, if not you will end up with greyish snow.

I am sure for spot metering, you need to + compensate the exposure, but for matrix metering, I am not sure....

Hmm... that's a good question. Is the matrix metering smart enough to identify a snow scene? Well, to play safe do bracketting lor, take one at +0 and take one at +1... can delete off after reviewing anyway...

Yah, if anyone has tested and know the answer, can confirm? Cant test here, no snow....may be go snow city....but indoor, poor lighting....:bsmilie:
