Zuiko 18-180mm or 40-150mm

Hi all,

I would like to get a tele lens and is considering the Zuiko 18-180mm. Or should I just get the cheaper 40-150mm?

I currently have only 1 Zuiko lens which is the 14-54mm.

Looking for some advise and thank in advance.

Currently I have only the 40-150mm lens, what can I say this baby is one killer of a kit lens, sharpness is great for a kit lens, focusing speed is normal but tend to hunt on low light, but for the 18-180mm is really a nice walk around lens due to the coverage it gives you, but of course there's little price to pay having this convenience, some people say it's a little soft but I won't mind having one hehehehe:bsmilie: , I think a little usm will fix the softness but then again I haven't used this lens before maybe someone else can comment for this lens.

I don't know about the price but since you already have the 14-54 I think the 40-150 is a better choise than the 18-180. AFAIK the 40-150 has also larger aperture so it is faster. The 30mm extra is probably not that much anyway and you have no use for the range between 18-54mm since that is covered by your better lens anyway. IMO I think optically is easier to make higher quality 3.75 x zoom than a 10x one like the 18-180mm. Not very easy to go from wide angle to long tele, it just needs too much compromize.

I agree, i'm still using the kit lens 14-45mm and still kindda short for my needs, thinking of getting the 11-22 but with the 12-60 coming I think better to wait for it, It should cover my daily needs

It's a temptation to buy this lens and not to bring the two kits lenses when out travelling/tracking over long distance or for long period of time.

But honestly, I still luv the 40-150 kit. Either this or buy the 18-180 and throw the two kits lenses to the B & S' thread ( probably can get < $ 250 for both).

As for the 50-200 I am willing to wait for the new.

ya 36mm is not wide enough for travelling. You will miss a lot of shots I think.

Quite a few of my travelling shots are 28mm and below. I don't really understand the rational for the 18-180mm...

If you want to carry a single lens for travel, then it is maybe the 14-54 or better yet the new 12-60.

Sometimes it so hard to decide what's the 1 for all lens purpose. Most important is to see what is your shooting habits. This would somehow help decide the type of lens to carry.

Now when I travel, 11-22, 14-54, 40-150 and EC14 are the lens I carry with me. I too was in the dilemma on the 18-180 or the 14-54 but the 14-54 helps cover the lower light situations that the 18-180 would not be able to. If you don't already own the 40-150 or the 14-45 or the 14-54, then 18-180 would be interesting. Couple that with the 11-22, you only carry 2 lens. add a EC14 or the new EC20, WOW. Your focal length would be 11--360 which is more than sufficient fro most needs.

But slightly darker situation you just record with your EYES and store with your BRAINS.:bsmilie:

Agreed and personally I prefer at least 24mm for wide angle shots. At the moment, I can live with my 14-54mm. Looking more at the tele range (and price).

I think I like your lens combinations although I not too sure about the 11-22mm. But then again the 7-14mm is way way too expensive for me.

Anyway, thanks to all the inputs and I think the 40-150mm is probably the better choice in terms for pricing and needs for me.
