i have one 50mm f1.8 only at the moment,....

would like to get one of the zoom lens as below
-Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
-Canon EF 35-135mm f/4-5.6 USM
-Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

which one of those give a better contrast and a sharper image?

and how much will they cost brand new?

Value for money.

yeah...i agree with that...

i also have a 50mm/f1.8 only...at first i was also looking at

-Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
-Canon EF 28-135mm f/4-5.6 USM (not 35-135 rite?)
-Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

but now, i find that fixed max aperture if more useful for me...

Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX: $680 (but i dun really like the zoom ring which is very stiff)

and also Sigma 70-200 f2.8 : $1.1-1.2k

u cant go wrong with

-Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
-Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

never heard of anyone with Canon EF 35-135mm f/4-5.6 USM. probably because of the loss of focal lengths between 28 to 35.

i own the 28-105mm.... love the extra 1/2 stop of f/3.5 to f/4... the lens is solidly built with a metal mount.

i leave u with three links to decide:
Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Canon EF 35-135mm f/4-5.6 USM
Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM

u can send an e-quote to Cathay Photo with the following links:
Cathay Photo Store (under e-quote)

Sigma 28-70EX DF. 2nd generation. Even higher quality than the earlier 28-70EX. Even better value :)

Agree, if u dun need the extra 4mm, for me i shoot digital so no choice...

I just got the 24-70, so far so good. Of course, my final aim is still Canon L...the lens never gives good enough contrast...but for that price, who cares? Focusing is EXTREMELY fast but NOISY too. :D

Do consider the Tokina AF 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 ATX-Pro II. It's supposed to be very good. Around $700 at Cathay Photo.

wow...how much u paid for your D30?

are u stephan from HWZ too? who upgrade from 6900Z to G2 to Sony 707 and now D30?

many pple advise me to save up for a good lens for D30...else it will be a waste of DSLR, if i were using film SLR, i know that i won't enlarge more than 8R, so consumer lens will be good enough for me, but if I shoot in digital, when i need to crop out certain part and zoom in, that's where the quality of the lens makes a big different

my plan is get a decent super wide angle Prime lens to compensate the 1.6x multipler, i cannot shoot much scenry with a 50mm/f1.8

me too, wallet quite empty, that's why i choose Prime lens for super wide angle as i can always crop away the parts that i dun want, also, these prime lens have relatively large aperture (f2.8 or f1.8) and they are quite cheap ($300-$500) for a brand new Sigma Super wide prime lens.

next, i will save save save for a super zoom, eg. 70-200/f2.8, this one have a fixed max aperture of f2.8 from 70mm all the way till 200mm, whereas for 28-135mm f/4-5.6, it is f4 at 28mm and while u zooming, it will increase to 5.6 at 135mm.... IMO, it is too slow for low light which i shoot most.

btw, i am quite new to SLR also and above are just my personal opinion....I just wish to share what i have learnt here, so dun flame me if i said something wrong or misleading & correct me if i am wrong ok

yup,....

i paid total of $2700 for the d30 plus 1 x 256mb cf, 1 x 420ex, 1 x canon 50mm f1.8.

i think quite a good deal, the seller was a freelance photographer.

ppl advise is better get canon original lenses as its usm feature. anyway any recommendation for sigma super wide angle lens?

good price that u have got there...

there are pple who swear that only original canon lens can make it.....but for pple like us who cannot afford those....2nd hand and 3rd party lenses will be my only choice...i will rather get a good 3rd party lens than Canon 'cosumer' lens

for Sigma, some of the lens have HSM and it is equivilent to Canon USM...

i am looking at Sigma 24mm/f2.8 ($300+) or 24mm/f1.8 ($500+), i guess Canon's super wide is abt twice the price?

note that only 24mm/f1.8 use internal focus, the f2.8 version is like 50mm/f1.8, the lens will move in and out during focusing...which i dun like

but these super wide prime lens gives very little distortion compare to those super wide zoom lens, btw, 24-70/f2.8 is $600+, but since i already have a 50mm/f1.8, so i dun think i should overlap with a 24-70

there are even wider lens like 20mm or even 8mm...but i am not sure of the price

anyone can recommend Super wide prime lens from tokina or Tamron too?
