I find the horizontal composition of the 2nd pic just fine.

However, it's so nice that it almost feel staged.

Yet, we know it isn't.

Gives a sympathy-emphathy-creepy feeling...
all jumbled up..

Vertical wouldn't have worked with the narrow space. It would have shown more of the floor and ceiling which are both uninteresting, the walls were where all the texture was.
