The Sony XLR-K3M is a new XLR interface for MIS enabled sony cameras. For XLR-K1M and K2M owners, there are a few reasons to upgrade to the K3M.
First the K3M adds a physical volume control dial to a 3.5mm mic input, eliminating the need to menu dive for audio control.
Second, the new 3.5mm input is active and hotswappable during recording with the K3M. This allows for uninterrupted audio/video recording even if a mic is inserted into the 3.5mm port mid-clip. The old K1M and K2M mutes any existing onboard 3.5mm input on the camera during recording and there is no way to switch to a 3.5mm mic without first detaching the XLR unit and then restarting a new recording.
Third, the XLR-K3M comes with a new (and hence rare) accessory - a MIS extension cable. Although it's a short one, I imagine it will be possible to extend it with third party cables by carefully cutting the cable and studying the connection.
This will allow the new multipolar ECM-B1M digital microphone to be used on a boom.
