i think a light meter isn't that essential when we're doing digital. there's no need to get it spot-on the first time like when you're using film.

my experience with studio lights has always been a trial and error approach. snap, take a look at the histogram, and decide whether you like how the lights are positioned, how both sides are filled and make the adjustments. shouldnt take more than 5 minutes to get a proper setting that you like.
