End of XP support pending. No more security updates for XP. In addition, Microsoft threatened to end virus signature updates for Microsoft Security Essentials on XP on same date. But have since delayed it till 15 July 2015.
Was Microsoft hoping to force XP users to buy Windows 8?

Who cares?

People have told me they turned off Windows Automatic Updates for years; and everything is still alright on their PCs running XP.
Some Windows updates have caused crashes, instead of helping your PC.

It has not occurred to Microsoft that users can choose Kaspersky or Trend Micro or Avast or Avira, etc... numerous other security software and continue to use their XP machines.

Bad move, Microsoft.
Microsoft XP and Windows 7 are acceptable. Windows Vista was junk.
The recent Microsoft Windows 8 is an abject failure.

Microsoft XP is still popular.

95 percent of the word's ATM machines still use XP.

switch to Linux. No one Writes Virus code for Linux because it's too boring

I only have a Netbook running on WinXP (PC running on Win7)... its purpose is to download torrent. No great loss if MS no longer support WinXP...

Have you seen any statistics about
- the most virus infested computers
- the origin of many DDoS attacks
- the location of zombie / bot nets?
You should, then compare with the OS reported as host. I hope that's obvious enough and No, you don't need any conspiracy theory to explain this. AFter M$ ends the support the situation will get worse.
And hoping that any of the AntiVirus products will help is so ridiculous.. That's like putting a biometric access solution on the front door when the windows are all rusty, broken and the backdoor's lock hasn't been fixed for years.. it's pointless waste of money and efforts.
If one really needs to continue with XP then put it into a virtual machine and limit the network access in the LAN / Home Wifi. But for most standard applications there shouldn't be any need to maintain XP.

Maybe the viruses will stop since it's no longer a MS product.

Incentive for MS haters will be making a non revenue product superior

Today is the last day of support by Microsoft for XP & XP Pro.

For banks, it is not about the cost of the replacement OS software.
They can afford. It is about RELIABILITY. Because ATM is about money transactions.

In a congratulatory memo to his team, Jon DeVaan, the corporate vice president for Windows Development at Microsoft, noted that he expects Windows 8.1 to be much more reliable than Windows 8 and to have a "fighting chance" of approaching the reliability of Windows 7 "in some areas." This suggests that Windows 8 is known internally to be not as reliable as its predecessor, a fact Microsoft has never stated publicly.

I asked Dean Stewart, Senior Director, Self-Service Product Management at Diebold, Inc, why all the talk is of Windows 7.

His response:

The answer generally lies not with the ATM, but with the ecosystem the ATM sits in. Bankers are conservative by nature. They have invested a lot of time, effort, and money in creating a secure maintainable environment based on Windows 7. The environment is not just the ATM, but the teller platforms, thousands of PCs, servers, and other systems. They want to maximize their return on that investment. They will run Win 7 until the end of its extended support in 2020. Only a very few have expressed any interest in Windows 8.

Another point to note is compliance and evidence / verification of reliability and accuracy. Applications that worked on XP now have to be proven to the last bit to give exactly the same results when being ported to Win7 or 8. Not forgetting any other sub systems being used there: Java, .Net or others. That costs a huge amount of money to proof and someone has to sign off for that. In the age of corporate governance and endless processes it will take ages to get this done.
It always gives me a strange feeling seeing Win XP starting on an ATM after maintenance work..

200 millions Chinese are screwed.
If they were to upgrade to Win 7 or later, then rather the operators of the bot nets are screwed who use those 200 million unpatched XP machines
