Why no carbon fiber camera/lens body?

Sorry just some consumer questions as I am not not knowledgable in CF.

Will CF of all grades cause skin injury should it crack or break? Too flexible and it won't work.

Will CF be toxic when constant expose to heat from the chips? Since we have direct contact.

Will CF have the same heat dissipation as alloy?

Does CF has the same strength per area than alloy or polycarbonate, yet retaining the same durability? I have alway see tough CF component in larger circumference but not as plates.

My colleague had an expensive carbon fiber racer which cracked after running over a big bump.
 

Why produce a light weight camera when a heavy camera can add stability, plus the high price of even a small cf camera? Those marketing hobos will stack on the price just for the sake of it...

Besides, who knows what will happen when u drop ur D3-spec CFRP body onto hard concrete...

i'm studying engineering course on final year in NUS. My friend who specialise in building carbon fibre for car components actually had seriously contemplate about trying to build a carbon fibre camera body, or perhaps build a CF wrap for starter.

would you want a carbon wrap over of your camera?

for me, i prefer function to comestic. wrapping camera body around will make it bulkier and heavier instead....by creating a full cf body is another story.
 

Instead of a CF wrap which would increase the weight of the camera your friend could consider making a replacement body shell. I.e. remove the guts from a Canon 1D and put it into the new shell.

Most photogs who are buying pro-level cameras actually want a metal alloy body. Canon's earlier pro cameras were polycarbonate, i.e. EOS-1, EOS-1n, EOS-3, EOS-5 and they gained more fans and prestige when they went to alloy bodies.

If you're looking into doing it as a business how about making diving/water-proof CF shells for cameras.
 

Dude, my initial response was for your comment on the brittle features of carbon fibre without providing enough details. It's good that you know that there are different types of carbon fibre composites available. Do note that there were numerous industrial use of carbon fibre way before commoners we got to know them.

Carbon fibre alone with a graphitic characteristics is brittle. But Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers show extraordinary strength to weight ratio. That's why you can see all expensive bikes' forks and body frames are made of CFRP.

It's absolutely possible for a camera body to be made using CFRP. But price / performance ratio may not look good in today's production technologies.

Yup, i know. TS was asking specifically why no CF camera body and lens. I gave the answer leh... I doubt he was looking for the price / performance trade off comparison.

But then again, what do i know? Im a photographer. Not an engineer. =)
