Newton and Sim lim square, not sure why tourists keep flocking to these two places.

Coz they monopolized all the taxi drivers.... Furthermore, STB only advertise come to SG, they never advertise, don't go to SL & newton:bsmilie:

I wonder what regulation NEA used to suspend their licence... Pricing is not under govt control, and if it's a commercial dispute, it shouldn't involve NEA.

Wonder if STB could do something to the Lucky Plaza camera shops...

Heard that the tiger prawns there are very big.

Do what? Take over the shop and start to leh-long all their cameras & lenses?:bsmilie:

Actually, is it a seller or buyer's problem?

Now it's a seller's problem, a huge one I guess.
Neutrally looking.. it's a communication problem. It doesn't cost much to ask for the price .. or to announce the price upfront. And from the POV of customer service: any honest shop will give the price upfront, not as a surprise when everything is eaten.

cause STB put them as places of attraction or something like that in all brochures.

but my guess is, STB will claim they are not responsible for maintaining the fair trade there, will likely to push all blame to those kana chop for not clarifying price before ordering. std reply.

Those at Newton aren't that BIG lah...I remember a few years back when I went to Vietnam for a biz trip, I went to one of their local restaurants and they had these huge live prawns/shrimps...The largest one was ard 1Kg each...:bsmilie:

biggest tiger prawn is only about 650g.

The Newton stall owner and helpers surrounded the tourists and threaten them, sounds exactly like those Sim Lim salesmen.

they should be put to jail, threatening is a serious offense.

if no charge, then i also can go and threaten my boss for higher pay :p

to be fair, no amount of policing will ever be enough.

to draw parallels, what do you suggest can be done at our very own homeground in clubsnap b&s? :) so many deals go sour, so many people emo.. even with the old rating system it was just a matter of starting up a new account and offering a good deal.

I know it's an old story. Just to share the article for those who have not read yet...

$239 for 8 tiger prawns

SIX Americans who sat down to a seafood dinner at Newton hawker centre on Saturday just about fell off their chairs when they were presented a bill for $491, including $239 for eight tiger prawns.

Mr Michael Rigby, 30, an exhibition specialist from Oregon who comes here regularly for work, said: 'It was more than what it would have cost us at a restaurant in the hotel.'

He said that when he asked the stallholder whether the bill had a mistake, he only got a shrug in reply. Seconds later, the man returned with four others, who he said looked to be in their 40s and well-built.

He said: 'I guess they didn't want us to leave without paying.'

Ironically, he and his wife, Dewi, 36, had set out to show their friends - Mr Sal Rubio, 53, his wife, daughter and son-in-law, all here for the first time - how safe, clean and honest this island city was.

The food centre was crowded then, so when the helpers from stall 43, Tanglin Best BBQ Seafood, showed them to a table, they felt obliged to order from them.

Besides tiger prawns, they had four crabs, baby squids, half a steamed chicken, four bottles of beer and fruit juices.

Mrs Rigby, referring to the price of the prawns, said: 'They were prawns. It was not like we dined on lobsters!'

She added that halfway through the meal, the stallholder even plonked two grilled sting rays on their table.

'We told them that we did not order them and they were quickly taken away. Afraid we would be charged for them, we asked for an itemised bill. When it came, we were shocked,' she said.

Mr Rubio, who is from Arizona, told The Straits Times that the prices seemed comparable to those of an American restaurant and thought nothing of it - until Mr Rigby queried the bill.
