MALAYSIAN cleaner died after he was mauled by a white tiger at the Singapore Zoo on Thursday.

Mr Nordin Mondong, 32, from Sarawak, is believed to have fallen into the moat surrounding the white tiger enclosure at about 12.15pm and was immediately pounced on by the three big cats weighing over 100 kg each.

The Singapore Zoo has three Bengal white tigers, Omar, Winnie, and Jippie.

Earlier this year, 9-year-old Omar was short-listed as a possible contender to replace Ah Meng as the zoo's icon.

Terrified visitors near the section watched the vicious attack in horror and screamed.

Three zoo keepers were alerted to the commotion and sprang to rescue Mr Nordin. Two of them tried to distract the three tigers and managed to keep them under control but a third kept on mauling Mr Nordin.

The keepers managed to pull the cleaner to safety and rushed him to hospital. But he died on the way.

Mr Nordin started working at the Zoo in June.

It is believed he was not supposed to be in the tiger enclosure and was assigned to clean the chimpanzee section.

He was seen behaving in an agitated manner before he fell into the moat

Suicide? Or he decided that those white tiggers need human flesh once in a while?

But seriously, it isn't the animal fault here. They are wild animals after all...

hope the white tigers will not be put down... :(
Why? For behaving like the wild predator that it is? It was just being a Tiger and doing what tiger do. Unfortunate a keeper died. Why it has to happen I am not sure but from what I read, he was not acting like a human with a mind and using it the moment he steps into their domain.

He was suicidal. These people just create trouble for others.

It's quite surreal, I just shot the tigers a while back, and now they are man-eaters. Anyway they won't be put down, so all's fine I guess.

i read that they had called in licensed shooters to shoot the tigers. wonder if they were planning to shoot to kill. no disrespect to the deceased but it would have been a great pity to see 3 endangered white tigers shot, human life takes precedence of course. but the whole incident was just sad.

but at least the tigers in our zoo aren't so fat and lazy that they've lost their animal instinct.

It's a safety precaution any zoo worth their salt has.
