Last night I took some shots with my Nikon D50 and all the shots (mixture of flash and non-flash) have the same white balance temperature of 5000K. Is this possible?

If your camera white balance setting is manually fixed to 5000K, then all captured images will have the manually fixed white balance setting.

Change of white balance setting is explained in Nikon D50 user manual, page 49 and 79

The WB is set to Auto... recently this camera seems to be quite cranky. In fact, I just took another shot in the same room (with same lighting) and again the value is exactly 5000K.

There was another time when the exposure is fixed at some value (which I cannot remember now) regardless of whether I use external flash or not. The problem was resolved after I "rested" the camera of a few days.

Have you tried changing your WB to a preset instead?
