Which Ultra-wide angle lenses is better?

Think of getting a ultra-wide angle zoom lenses for canon mount.
As i am sure alot of bro/sis out there has experimented ultra-wide lenses with splendid result, any recommendation will be of great help to me in terms of performance/result/value for $$......

Google a few as below:

are u using FF or crop?

For crop, EF-S 10-22, sigma's 10-20, tamron's 10-24 and tokina's 12-24 or 11-16.

For FF, 17-40, 16-35 or sigma's 12-24. If u want prime, can consider 14mm.

I'm using Singma's 12-24 on a FF body. It's not as sharp as the CZ 16-35, but 12mm is awesome. It's sharp enough once you stop it down to F8 or so, and the slight "Sigmaish" yellow tint is easily corrected.

I think I'm qualified to comment since I've tried sigma 10-20, tamron 10-24, and sigma 12-24 at the stores, and owned canon 10-22, tokina 11-16, tokina 12-24.

If you want simple answer, Tokina 11-16 is the best in terms of sharpness (by small margin to all other lenses). Sigma 12-24mm best in distortion control, and canon 10-22 in colour & contrast.

Wow. Thanks for the info. I've got Canon EFS10-22, and have always been wondering how it stacks up against the rest. You're right about the Canon's colour/constrast. It not so good with sharpness at the fringes.

now i can narrow it down to either canon's or tokina's

But most of the time you wouldn't use it @ f/2.8.
So you shd maybe consider the Canon 10-22.

I've had really great experience using canon's 10-22. Like other have said, the colours and contrast are really good.

Pity i suspect mine's focusing is slightly inaccurate. front focuses if i'm not wrong

No fiscal concerns? Go for the Canon 10-22mm. I liked it. Else, competition is very keen. You really should try things out to see what you like.

Then you shd send it back for calibration. I tested my friend's copy, was sharp @ f/2.8

most uwa , third party or original are pretty good.

some considerations you should take note of:

1) perspective, 10mm and 12mm very big difference for me.

2) type of distortion, some can be corrected easier than others. for example, sigma 10-20 is excellent, but distortion is very weird at 10mm, to correct properly you need dxo plugin correction, or use liquify

3) whether can use filters, because of filter thread being present or not

4) widest aperture (frankly, not important, landscapes should be f/8 and above - if you are going to shoot handheld, then i question your interest in landscapes.. and if you use uwa for anything else, it is not really going to be a serious picture most of the time)

I'm currently back to the 16-35 and 17-40 with my 5D's, but thoroughly enjoyed the Tokina 12-24 when I was shooting with cropped bodies.
