which photo enhancement s/w is free and good,

photoshop is the best, but its not a simple s/w to operate. and its not free.

judging from your avatar, you have a digital camera?
it should come with image editing software (most likely Photoshop LE) right?

actually for photos, you would mostly need 2 tools from Photoshop - Curves and Unsharp Mask. Most of the time u will be mucking with these 2, esp Unsharp Mask. u don't really have to learn all of photoshop to edit your images. (knowing much more is good though. there's more than 1 way to do things in photoshop)

you can try Jasc Paintshop Pro. Very easy to use.

I thought the C-2040 you are using comes with Photoshop Elements or LE?

Oh yes, The GIMP is free. Unfortunately I don't know the URL to it. You can do simple search on google or your favourite search engine. Even works on Linux. :)

It is developed in Linux, so it works really well in Linux :)
It's free and information/documentation is plentiful on the web...
