which photo enhancement s/w is free and good,

photoshop is the best, but its not a simple s/w to operate. and its not free.

judging from your avatar, you have a digital camera?
it should come with image editing software (most likely Photoshop LE) right?

actually for photos, you would mostly need 2 tools from Photoshop - Curves and Unsharp Mask. Most of the time u will be mucking with these 2, esp Unsharp Mask. u don't really have to learn all of photoshop to edit your images. (knowing much more is good though. there's more than 1 way to do things in photoshop)

you can try Jasc Paintshop Pro. Very easy to use.

I thought the C-2040 you are using comes with Photoshop Elements or LE?

Oh yes, The GIMP is free. Unfortunately I don't know the URL to it. You can do simple search on google or your favourite search engine. Even works on Linux.

It is developed in Linux, so it works really well in Linux
