Hello again guys , which lens should i get ? 17-40mm f4L or 24-105 f4L IS ?
I am using a 30D and not very sure which is a better choice ..... still thinking . I have already got a 70-200mm and a 18-55 kit lens . Dont really like the kit lens so was thinking , if i were to get a 17-40mm i would only miss out on the 41-69mm range . it would not be that much a diff right ? (can try walking a little forward or backward to offset the difference right ?) But if i were to get a 24-105mm , I would be missing on the 17mm..... is 24mm wide enought ? Damn confused on which one to get .... Which one do you guys recommend ?

sorry huh , still very new to this ... Also is the 17-40mm f4L a good overall lens ? or is the 24-105mm f4L IS better ?

7 mm makes a hell lot of difference when it comes to wide angle ... should get 17-40 f4 ... well known for its sharpness ...

u can aim 24-105 f4 IS as ur next target though :p

thanks bro

so that means the 24mm is just not wide enough right ?

only u can tell bro.. since u have the kit lens, do u find urself always using 18mm? if yes, then get the 17-40.. if not, both are good choices coz 24-105 gives u a good range to play with.
since u're considering the 17-40, u might want to try out the 17-55mm f/2.8 too..

often it is not on a 1.6 crop. this is especially true when you can't walk further back (e.g. wall, small room, etc.)

thanks bro

take the 17-40

it works out to be widest at 28mm effective FOV w.r.t. FF

Usually for group photos, you will find that you need 17mm more than 24mm ... of course, you can always opt to walk further back ...

24mm is definately not wide enough on a 1.6x crop.I've tried it before and i dun find it wide enough.Or maybe you should try renting it to see for urself if you like it:)

guess its 17-40mm f4L then :)

is there other this kind of 'L' lens beside this to recommend ? Not much of an option huh ?

well,do you really have to get L?Theres the 17-55F2.8 IS and the 17-85 F4-5.6 IS:)

I have both lenses you are considering when I had my 20D. Personally, I find the 24-105mm a bit "not here not there" on a 1.6x crop DSLR. Didn't use it as much as I thought I would, but I kept the lens anyway because I know I was going FF eventually. Now on a 5D, I can finally put the 24-105mm into good use as a true walkabout lens. Little wonder why the 24-105mm is the kit lens on the 5D. I still use my 17-40mm for wide landscape shots or if I wanna take shots with a unique perspective.

If you were to choose one lens for your 30D, I would recommend the 17-40mm if you take mostly WA shots. You can also consider the 17-55mm to narrow the gap between to your 70-200m, but bare in mind that you can't use the 17-55mm on 1.3x crop or FF DSLRs in future because of the EF-S mount.

i think its wrong for others to tell you what is wide enough for you. you may not fo beyond 24mm for most of your applications. if that is the case, get the 24-105L and an ef-s 18-55 so that it can cover your wide shots; or maybe even a 10-22 if you're really really into wide angle. a 17-40 is kind of not here not there.

go for the 24-105L.

yes 7mm is a huge of a difference... if you get 17-40.. I will tell you not wide enough. cos' there is 10-22 (7mm difference).

Get the 24-105 and target your next on a super wide 10-22  I own a 17-40 but sold it to get the 10-22:lovegrin:
If you have more $$ to spare later... 16-35f2.8 MarkII :bsmilie: buy buy buy!!!

The BBB virus himself speaketh...

End of the day, get what you need/want for the type of photos you shoot most often.

if u are sure u not going FF, i would recommend the 17-55. very sharp lens, 55-70 u can use ur legs to do the zooming.

anyone knows the current price range for 24-105 f4L? thx.
