Hi, im looking at a 50mm 1.4 vs a 85mm 1.8 potrait len. Couldn't decide on 1 so i would like to seek more opinon before i decide. Currently i have a 70-200mm 2.8, will the 85mm be render useless to me since i can use my 70-200mm instead? So the 50mm would be a better choice?

Depends largely on what you shoot and your shooting style/preference. If you are using 1.5x/1.6x body, the 85mm may be slightly too long for indoor portraits. 50mm would give a wider FOV.
For general purpose portraits on a crop body, the 50mm would probably be a good choice. YMMV. Best is to try out both lens first before taking the plunge. (that is what I would normally do...borrow or rent out to try first).
As for 85mm vs 70-200mm 2.8, I would say both lens can co-exist in any set-up, since they serve different purposes. The 70-200 for range, and versatility, the 85mm for speed (larger f-stop) and low light situations.

I will go for 50mm f1.4, reason is bigger FOV, if the FOV is too wide you always can do cropping using software and unable vice versa for 85mm. f1.4 give you better Depth of Field for portrait. I have few sample capture using 50mm f1.8 at hendytok.myphotoalbum.com.

Oh, i was using 400D, and i actually want to try 85mm F1.8 and sell away my 50mm F1.4

Get the 50mm. On a cropped sensor it approximates that of 75 - 80mm already.
The 85mm has the advantage of a larger aperture than ur 70-200mm/2.8. If you do not miss that with your current 70-200mm then probably might not be useful.

as a portrait lens, if u have the space, work with the 85. better compression and bokeh than the 50. the 2/3 stops of light shldnt make a big difference when u are shooting outdoors and it will tough to work with the 85 indoors anyway.
