Hi all,

What filters do you guys recommend for Sunrise/sunset filters?

Singhray filters.

I have a question, which side do you place the filter? The darker part on top? Why? To make the sun dimmer to be able to use longer exposure times?

GND is use to reduce dynamic difference between highlight and shadow, to try to squeeze in dynamic range of the scene. ND is to reduce the overall exposure by restricting light going thru the lens. which side u place GND depends on the scene and there is no STANDARD way of using it, you can place it anywhere that will help serve its purpose

In particular, there is a select group of GND filters called the reverse Grad filters which could come handy for this purpose. The darkest portion lies at the middle of the demarcation, where one would smack it across the sun

Here is an illustrated example http://singh-ray.com/reversegrads.html
( they are by no means the only makers of reverse grad filters )
