I've been having problems accessing www.openlens.com. Is there a problem with that site or is it just my luck? Couldn't access that site for the past 2 days.

There are some problems with the ISP, they are upgrading the system. It should be able to solve soon and back to life soon.

From my ISP:

This email is in regards to your domain hosting account: openlens.com

Feature Price Web Hosting strives and prides on only using the highest quality equipment for the least possible downtime in the industry. However, regardless of stature in the industry and or manufacture you utilize and entrust with your sites you will always have failure at one point or another.

Please note: After reading the following message, please feel free to call us anytime at our customer support service number: 800-605-4883
If you are located internationally (not in the continental United States), please make sure to call us at the following number: +1-941-461-6031

Unfortunately, a severe water catastrophe has occurred on your UNIX server system. The water main that runs through our data center building bursts and water begins cascading into server room I, jeopardizing a limited amount of UNIX servers. The UNIX server your account is located on is one of these machines. At this point, we must regretfully declare all data as lost.

Feature Price has chosen to restore the operating system on your UNIX server with new hard drives and hardware and inform clients about actions and reasons - and how to proceed.

This action, which has emergency-character (rather than being thoroughly planned), is that due to the massive hard disk water damage, its partitions on the server became corrupted. You will notice this by your website not being accessible via any service of any kind.

As your website is now inaccessible you and of course wish to receive an explanation. Please find the following summary of unlucky events:

<========================================>

@ Approx. 1220hrs: On the 9th of July your UNIX server was working properly.

@ Approx. 1245hrs: The water main that runs through our data center building bursts and water begins cascading into server room I, jeopardizing a limited amount of UNIX servers.

@ Approx. 1250hrs: Water to the building is cut off via the main shutoff valve located on the exterior of the building and employees are called into emergency status.

@ Approx. 0100hrs: System administrators begin arriving and assistants begin trying to relocate machines out of the "waterfalls" occurring in server room I.

@ Approx. 0130hrs: All servers are relocated and an assessment begins of what servers are recoverable and which are beyond repair.

@ Approx. 0155hrs: The situation is assessed and the servers that were recoverable are back online and operational. System administrators and assistants begin trying to recover data from the ruined hard drives, looking into many options for data recovery. Especially outside recovery sources were contacted.

@ Approx. 0330hrs; System recovery on machines is still being attempted. Trying different options while waiting on a response from a data recovery specialist.

@ Approx. 2000hrs; We have been contacted by the Data Recovery Center and they say there is good hope they can revive the harddisks that were damaged. They say they are 99% certain all information can be restored however, only time and patience will tell. They have notified us that the earliest time to recovery would be 8am and at the latest would be 1400hrs on 07/10.

24 hours later -

@ Approx. 1900hrs; The harddisks are still at the Data Recovery Center at this time on emergency status. We have been notified by the center they are working around the clock. We are expecting everything to be returned within 12/24 hours. If the Data Recovery Center cannot bring this information back to a stable state new servers will be put into place and accounts will be recreated. We are currently awaiting new information from the center at this time but do not have an ETA when this new information will become available.

36 hours later -

@ Approx. 1000hrs; After reasonable hopes however too much time past, data recovery specialists declare the hard drives that were not recoverable as "not recoverable in reasonable timeframe". This means that a recovery of these drives, one of which was for your server, can possibly take weeks.

@ Approx. 1035hrs: Your UNIX hosting server has been officially declared “inoperable”. Due to low chance of data recovery success and after days of waiting for data to be recovered, Feature Price restores the operating system and re-initates client hosting.

<========================================>

Feature Price has strict guidelines established for service fitness. If a server fails, that server is then removed from the Server Farm and / or Operating System is being reinstalled. Thank you for your patience during this unfortunate failure. However here are the following steps needed to be taken on your behalf to get your site online again.

*** IMMEDIATELY at the time you receive this message you should be receiving the new access information to your new account. Please *read* the access information. It is contained in an email with the subject "ACCOUNT INFORMATION".

*** Please note that of course, you will NOT BE CHARGED for this.

*** You will also receive a copy of the access information to your ADDITIONAL DOMAIN NAMES and SUBDOMAINS.

You may ask what are the advantages to moving to this re-installed operating system that we offer as renumeration for this server failure:

i would like to see openlens up again but to rebuild from scratch seems to be too much grief.... maybe you can take a sabbatical first :)

I would like to see the site up again. It's not easy to find a site that doesnt really have a size limit and allow direct linking of images for free.

i tried to savage some things out from my temp internet folder
i will email it to you if you want

Thanks. I have all of the code and HTML files on my notebook...the only problem is that OpenLens was primarily data-based (members, articles, forum, FAQ, etc...), and the database was lost. So, even if I restore the files, it will still be almost like starting from scratch.

What I need is opinions on whether I should do it or not, with everyone knowing that they'll have to signup again and re-upload their images. :dunno:

If I secide to go through it again, it will take about a week to reimpliment the site into something usable (reinstall the image management binaries, upload the HTML files, build the data structure, upload and test the PHP & CGI files, etc...)

Before the crash I had some other ideas for improvements like online journals and multi-lingual support that are partially complete. The whole thing was a bit tedious at times, especially when I would get complaints from people who thought they were actually paying for something , but overall it was fun for me and I wouldn't mind investing some time into it again. I just need to know if it would be worth investing that time and energy again. :dunno:

Hmm...someone who thought they were actually paying for a service and not benefiting from someone who just wanted to create something that he always wanted to have and share it with everyone else. Umm...did I ever recieve your membership check? ;)

Well, I for one wouldn't mind re-uploading my images ;)

I for one would not mind uploading the images again. :)
Yes, I would like to see Openlens up and running again, though preferably not having the ISP server near a water pipe. :p

OpenLens is back online!

After a couple weeks of sleepless nights I have revived OpenLens.com . Need a place to host your pictures and video? Here ya go! And, as before, file leeching is allowed. So images hosted at OpenLens.com can be referenced in other forums and even your own website.

I need some sleep ;)
