Or they could just remove those convicted of war crimes from the shrine, or erect a separate memorial to remember & pay respect to those who fought & died honorably for their country, excluding the war criminals ...

Won't change much if Stir-er wants to Stir...

Like the old saying goes...."He Who Don't Know History... is Doomed to Repeat it"...

Only by admitting the past....could Japan ever solve this issue...

What else will you do to divert the ill progress domestics situation? It's not a coincident, nor is this isolated, this Abe likes to play China card so this is a calculated move... if you fall into his trick...then you are playing by his card....but if you don't....many years later he will claims credit for laundrying all the crimes that Japan had committed in the pass....so he is not a good man but a very good politician imo...China etc can only LLBP....alway summon their envoy to protest this or that or fly in a few jet or Lioning to patrol the Diayu's....nothing else they can do...

just a simple humble apology needed
just remove the war criminals to the basement store room

whats so hard right ?

what does all this mean ?

In 1945, Japan has surrendered.... but spiritually and in their hearts silently....Japan has not surrendered yet

Ed, if everything was so straightforward and easy and people could all swallow their pride, we won't need Moderators in CS. :bsmilie:

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/mobile/singapore/singapore-regrets/936724.html just paying respect to their ancestor only. they hv the right to do that. I am a Chinese too. what's past is past.

Singapore has done the right and honourable thing for the heros and heroins who lost their lives in the Japanese Occupation.

A chapter that Japanese can't easily wipe away and we can't forget for generations to come.

Without Hiroshima and Nagasaki our president might now be a guy called General Tiger Yamashita:

And every morning we'll be singing Japanese national anthem Kimigayo in the assembly.

Please ponder upon this for a minute. :)

 And they continue to try white wash their ugly past from the succeeding generations instead of facing up to it.

A side note....Japan isn't the only nation doing it.

One of the most vocal Nation against Yasukuni War shrine knows alot about how to "White Wash Their Ugly Past" as you put it... and that Nation is... CHINA.

Anyone tried asking the Communist Party in China to account, explain or apologize for the madness during the years of Mao's Great_Leap_Forward (estimated death of 18-24 million)... or the more infamous Cultural_Revolution (estimated death of 30 million)....

Has the ruling party in China ever admitted and/or apologize for the action of Mao ?? I don't think so... instead, they build Mao a $100m Yuen, Golden Statue to mark his 120th Birthday....

IMHO... instead of using the Shrine visit to rise nationalism in China... it may be better for them to 'put their money where their mouth are'... and prove to the rest of the World that China isn't just the Pot, that call the Kettle... Black.

Fully agreed. To move on, one must acknowledged pass mistakes. Otherwise, we will never know when the next is coming. While we can forgive, never forget so that generations that follow will not repeat it.

This is one of the greatness of China.
They don't have to inflict the pain to another country.
They absorb the pain within themselves to achieve greatness. :)

I am soooo surprise that people seemed to forget the past so easily... and had the cheek to come out and say what is past is past. Seriously...

If the Japanese had forget the past and will not repeat it given the chance... they will not retain their old war flag. They will not name their new helicopter destroyers the same names as their destroyers in WWII. And they will apologise. They will not put their war dead in a shrine and pay respect to these war criminals that had killed so many of our ancestors... in the Japanese mind, they have not done anything wrong... a total contrast to the Germans.

That is why people (who still have some memory of the past) doesn't approve.

China is sending a message to the world especially country like Singapore. This is the way to respect the leader who has done so much to the country. That is the least the grateful citizens can do. :)

We should build a Lee Kuan Yew golden status too. After all... Lee Kuan Yew did lead Singapore past some of the hardest time in Singapore history.

Well if your entire family (adults & children) were brutally tortured & killed, or you witnessed the rape, torture & massacre of the chinese in Singapore & China, And I erect a shrine to those who committed these acts on your family & countrymen to worship for all time, you may have a different opinion... Man may forgive, but they do not easily forget, especially when there is no real repentance or restitution.

for your info, my grandfather and his brother was shot dead in a firing squad by the japanese in malaya.

What has been done was by the older generations, and most probably those soldiers who shot them had no choice as they were under orders from the top.

We must learn to forgive.

Are you going to kill kei chan if she happens to pay respect to her ancestor who might happens to be one of those who commit the crime? LOL

Perhaps another way of looking at it is that apology = pay $$$.

Please don't give TS the excuse to start a few more threads here to 'discuss' about this subject...

If this generation of Singaporeans don't have the will to do it. It will happened in the next genration.

We are too near the history to see his contributions.

The noise of complaints has clouded our eyes and our sense of the greatness of a leader.

Exactly, china would be the next japan of wwII. They are starting to flex their muscle liao. Airspace, Antarctica, and now even the Moon.

The motivation of a nation, esp the stronger one to invade others is to secure the resources to sustain themselves.

I think TS has a team of creative writers to think of the next question who is funded by Sony Corp, All Nippon Airways, Ajinomoto Foundation, Nikon Camera etc. :bsmilie:

Which is something I do not understand. Yes... I mean there are a lot of complaints over *** now... but what does that actually got to do with anything that would dismiss the past goodness of Lee Kuan Yew's accomplishment?

You must understand the sole motivation of China to conquer the moon is to dispel the myth of 嫦娥 and a white rabbit.

They need to do that in their national psychic to that they can move forward to greater heights.

This is the same as our eternal quest to find a real merlion to realize our national dream. :)
