what you find in a photo ?

Hi to all the pros,
I wanna ask, what you usually look in photos?
Subject + backgound and what else?
What makes a good photo?
Besides using the rule of thirds,
and other tips ?

first thing you look for is the theme, content, subject, message in the photo.

if you can't find any, regardless how well compose, how beautiful lighting is, it is still a snapshot.

when we look at a photo, the creator is trying to tell us something, if we can't get a message, something is wrong, either the message is unclear or the creator fail to express himself. we will conclude: "don't know what you want to say?"

we always say "a photo speaks a thousand words", what if a photo speak nothing? what good is this photo?

For me is the feel. If i see the photo i like it its good. If i see it i don't like it that's it. Words and expressions can always be twisted. And they are happening everyday.

My tip is to stop looking for a magic formula. There is no such thing.

i mean, of course composition is imp

lighting too

but if remember why you're taking pictures

if it's for example, to capture your kid's joy and happiness,

do just that, others don't matter as much, well to me at least

for me, the main thing that I lookout for is the composition. and the focus in your subject. If your picture is a general snap with no focus, and nobody can tell what you're focusing on in the 1st or 2nd glance... smth is wrong

it depends on the situation.

if you look at more photos, that is the best way to learn. asking people to write text, when you have no pictures to look at , no basis on judge them.. that is useless.

read up on compositional theory, the net has a wealth of articles on this, along with examples. look at what is deemed to be good photography.. the top viewed galleries in pbase tend to be something good.

Sometimes it is not necessary to use the rule of thirds.
Sometimes it is difficult to find the subject.
Sometimes the background may merge with the content.
Sometimes image maker cannot decide "what makes a good photo?"

It's what you can see what others do not.

From a side note, we can say you will never
see the big picture if you think there is a rule
to identify what makes a good picture.
In certain composition we not only have to use
all the elements available, but all that we can
borrow at the time the shutter is released.

In relation to composition, do a search for 'design principles' and relate it to photography.
You will discover enormous wealth of knowledge that is priceless.
Rules of 3rds is just one of many.

you try to pick it up,
then you slowly find your own unique way of grasping those subjects and stuffs and etc in your photos, slowly you will make it!

I'll look out for the followings:

1. Is it in focus?

2. It it properly exposed?

3. What is the subject in the picture?

4. Can picture be improved by cropping?

5. Was picture taken at the right moment i.e. was the shutter activated at the right moment?

Mostly 2 aspect,

(1) Technical - exposure, focusing, PP (if any), lighting, etc..
(2) Theme/Story - Does the shot clearly convey the story/theme the photographer is trying to convey ? Is the subject/s chosen appropriate/suitable ? The moment ?

Of course the masters had no issue in using (1) to further fortifying (2) :thumbsup:
