Clubs...as in discos? If you can get close up to the action, any kind of wide angle zoom that goes down to at least an equivalent of 24mm on a 35mm would be your best friend.

for wide angle shots

nikkor 17-55 F2.8
tamron 17-50 F2.8, i think there's a sigma equivalent too (?)

for zoom

70-200 F2.8 (nikkor, sigma, tamron)
80-200 F2.8 nikkor

sorry, i don't know for canon but that should give you an idea :)

Edit: oh, if sneaker-zoom is ok with you, there's always the cheap 50mm F1.8. a lot faster than those listed. a more expensive one is 50mm F1.4. There's a F1.2 and F1.0 also but very expensive.

Canon.....

Good for club scene..... I think.... EF 24mm F1.4 will be the BEST!!!
For prime lens....... I would only use prime for low light situation...

EF 15mm f/2.8 Fish-Eye
EF 14mm f/2.8L USM
EF 20mm f/2.8 USM
EF 24mm f/1.4L USM

i tried once with canon g2 at widest = 35mm, no flash, manual focus at 3m (dof 1.18m to 6.46m at f2.8) from the band performing. find it is good enough. shot in raw because of the color strobes.

what i really would like to use is if fuji make a f30 with manual mode at iso800 (g2 max out at iso400) to get dof of 1.07m to 14.5m at f4 at 36mm focus at 2m with super low noise. not to mention the small size compare to dslr.
