Yo guys,

Might be getting a 2nd hand 2040z.
Any idea what should I look out for before I close the deal?

hot pixel , dead pixel etc?

Just suggestions:
scratches?
warranty period left?
standard accessaries in box?
any throw-ins?
...

NO more warranty. Comes with 2 x Li-ion disposables (still
shrinkwrapped), 32MB Olympus SM card, the camera bag, and the Olympus tripod (never before used).

bring a laptop there, take some pictures and put in onto the notebook immediately.

The LCD is too small to reveal any deal pixels.

Camera brought from authorised dealer? Therefore covered by Olympus Singapore.

by the way, what's the price like?

I know Alan Photo sells it brand new, with 64MB smartmedia for only $630 (include GST)

Too poor to afford a notbook.

most likely the camera is using some very old firmware, and reflashing it to the latest, which helps to reduce the hotpixel problem might incur extra $$$

nothing great about the battery, even if its shrink-wrapped. Since its been keep unused for 1yr. Its charges are greatly reduced

I don't intend to use the batteries anyway.

Yup!
Happen to see my manual nearby, just grap it and type it in for your reference...

revenant, betta check carefully for dead pixels, cos since warranty is over you can't do anything about it if you do find one or two.

Since you are trading without a laptop or tv nearby, the most you can do is to magnify the playback image as much as possible, and scroll through the image carefully to look for dead pixels.

I recommend you take a pic at 1/125s with the lens cap on, and use that pic to check for dead pixel.

Good luck for your purchase!

hmm..... magnify playback image? meaning?

Take pic at 1/125s with lens cap on, then transfer the picture over to pc and check for dead pixel?

nope nope, take pic at 1/125s with lens cap on, then go to playback mode of the camera to playback the same pic you took. Using the zoom lever, you can zoom into the pic on the small LCD, zoom to the largest magnification. Then scroll along the image, make sure to cover all parts of it, and look for any non-black spots (bright white, pink, green etc). If there is any, high chance it is a dead pixel.

If you are not familiar with the magnification of the playback image, the seller should be able to help you.

Alright, thanks very much.

How about the hot pixel issue?

that is a characteristic of the camera, so if you have decided to get the 2040z, you should be ready to accept the hot pixels. Of course granted that 2 of the same type of CCD may have different number/intensity of hotpixels, the difference is usually very small. If you are really bothered by the hotpixels, can always check with olympus if they can upgrade the firmware for you, but note that you have no warranty anymore.

it would be great if Olympus release a update for Oly C2040, to include most of the new features found in newer camera, e.g. Noise Reduction and so on.

The price of C2040 drop quite a bit since the release of Canon A40. Good luck to your purchase.
