i use photoshop primarily..but i realised that when i open my camera's RAW files under photoshop and other different applications like picasa2, the contrast and brightness look different :dunno:

is it because of the calibration of monitor or colour profile used by the software?

Windows explorer....

I use Nikon View to view my RAW files and processed them on Nikon Capture

Nikon Capture.
To get view only, I used previewExtractor, faster than Nikon Capture.

Arto.

It could be both, but the predominant cause is likely in the way different programs process raw files. Raw data is a fairly accurate and objective representation of the image. Conversion software may process (i.e. distort) this data in undocumented ways to achieve a "pleasing" image. Most conversion software allows to adjust white balance, contrast, brightness, curves, acuity, noise filtering, etc, or has several preset "styles" to choose from - you even can get greatly different results from the same raw filen using the same program.
