let's see what photographers are using

maybe if u have more than 1 system, do state, eg Mac for processing, Unix for backup, etc....

sorry, i considered WinXP is the big umbrella for its other version (Win2k, Win2003, win2k server, winxp pro, winxp server etc) and similarly for unix (BSD, HP-UX, Solaris, etc) and also for Linux (whatever distro)

me not mac user....so for this OS X, it is UNIX architecture only right? or the user can actually use UNIX commands? and the other design also UNIX?

eg, os x got the su thing? need to mount device like in unix? got shells?

or users cannot use any hints of unix but a pretty interface?

pardon me, i haven't got the privilege to use the famous OS X before

In OS X there's a Terminal app which opens a bash shell where you can do Unix commands, including su, etc which you mentioned. Even perl, etc are available. Tho it's a BSD subsystem I wouldn't really consider OS X Unix tho.

But generally, you don't really get hints of a Unix/BSD system.

Like it or not it's UNIX-based, and Apple is the world largest UNIX shipping vendor.

What you think the Supercomputer cluster at Virginia Tech is running on?

If you want to see how your Mac OS X is actually been boot up in verbose mode, try holding down command-v (sorry for the mistake earlier, V key works only for very old Mac OS X) key after you press power on... ^^

Anyway, if you are technical inclined, read this nice article from an ex-colleague: http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/osx/

Now, back to the topic, running Mac OS X 10.3.7

Code:
omega % uname -a
Darwin omega.local 7.7.0 Darwin Kernel Version 7.7.0: Sun Nov 7 16:06:51 PST 2004; root:xnu/xnu-517.9.5.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC Power Macintosh powerpc

Code:
omega % hostinfo
Mach kernel version:
         Darwin Kernel Version 7.7.0:
Sun Nov 7 16:06:51 PST 2004; root:xnu/xnu-517.9.5.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC

Kernel configured for up to 2 processors.
2 processors are physically available.
Processor type: ppc970 (PowerPC 970)
Processors active: 0 1
Primary memory available: 2048.00 megabytes.
Default processor set: 69 tasks, 182 threads, 2 processors

The base for OS X is UNIX.

Abit different, but if u noe Linux, u are more-or-less there. :D

I ran Linux in the past (another PC runs Windows mostly for games and MS Word). Last year I got a Mac and have been using it since. I find the interface friendly and most importantly for me, it's has a UNIX based core. The Linux knowledge I have can be transferrred to OS X.

Alright, we know you are running Dual G5 with 2GB ram :blah:

btw, what is the command to show the above in Linux? :sweatsm:

In that case, just classify as WinNT 5.X, Unix Sys V and Unix Sys VII.

Running WinNT 5.0 anyway.

win 2000 pro and win NT at work..

Mac OS.X after work!

i do editing on both systems.

Debian GNU/Linux at home.. secure, small (300MB total install with compiler and X windows), fast and robust, unlike windoze.
