The kit lens sucks...:think: ... in that case... you must be looking for higher end "kit lens" like the Nikkor 17-55.
For portraits, try a 85mm lens. AF 85mm f/1.4D...:thumbsup:

the kit lens is a quality kit lens for walkabout!
Higher end portrait lens would be the 85mm f1.4 and 105mm DC f2

The kit lens suck? No way man. Its really good for street photog. Alot of my friends say my pictures are very sharp - all taken by the kit lens.
And so which lens would be a good complement (not to replace) for the kit lens when it gets dark?

The premium lenses would cost more than the body price of the D80. You have to think if this is what you need. The kit lens is light and is good enough for general use. Great for pple who fear heavy equipment.
theoretically its the f2.8 or wider lenses that are considered good complements/replacements when taking pictures indoors and in darker areas etc.
if you are looking for zoom lenses, then it will be costly, but if you are looking for a prime or something then there are cheaper options....
for the zooms there are 3rd party options like the tamron where you can see many nice shots by it over here in these forums.
i've not handled any of these lenses so i cant really give you any comments/advice on their performance. still learning how to make the best out of my kitlense and a single prime lense here
my 50mm f1.8 is a cheap solution. not very wide nor is there much zoom but its great for taking portraits and candids in the shade or indoors, especially when you dont have a tripod.
The former lens is out of production already. You can't buy it on its own, which is sad, because it was a good kit lens too.
Optically, I wouldn't say that 18-70mm is better than the 18-135. Build wise... yes.

Why don't the TS go and try out the lenses or perhaps join a photoshoot so that he/she can have a better understanding of Portraits and the lenses you will need?
I know some folks who uses lenses like 105 Macro VR, 150 Macro and even 70 - 300 to take portrait.
It's all about understanding the lenses, experimenting so that you get the best out of the lens.
And the 18-135 is not a sucky lens! I miss it after I sold it off.
However, as I'm shooting more low light conditions, it was a need to get a 2.8f lens

I am no lens guru but i think jus becos its a "kit lens" doesnt mean it sucks.
