Yes, in that case, do you want the background to be thrown out of focus? If you do, you can :

a. Pay for a lens with very wide aperture
b. Pay for a long lens and stand far away to take the close up of your subject (Take bokeh into consideration too)

Whichever that might be, chances are 1 x 50mm f/1.8 (cheap lens) + 70 - 300 mm lens should be good enough ..... You can get the Tamron Macro Lens too, but remember Macro picture are meant to have a flat surface output.

i have a 29-80 f2.8 lense now. i thinking of adding one more lense.
taking into consideration the 70-300 sigma marcos.

but temp to get the 90mm marco of tamron.

actually this lense is good enough but i am wondering if i need a zoom lense.

I used the following before:

AF 35 f/2
AF 50 f/1.4
AF 50 f/1.8
AF 85 f/1.4
AF 85 f/1.8
AF 18-35 f/3.5-4.5
AF-S 17-35 f/2.8
AF-S 24-120VR
AF-S 28-70 f/2.8
AF 180 f/2.8
AF 80-200 f/2.8
AF-S 80-200 f/2.8
AF-S 70-200VR f/2.8

All are good, which leads me to want to say, BUY BUY BUY

For portraits and poses, can use any focal length from 20mm to 200mm.
However, if u are beginner, its better to shoot at focal length 50mm-135mm.
For me, I mainly use 50mm and 85mm prime lens nowadays, got to move and walk a lot though.

Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 - cannot go wrong!

AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED
AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF ED

Also not bad... see which one you wanna pay for...

Lens that I've used before for portraits:

  1. 28-135 f/4.5-5.6 IS U
  2. 17-40 f/4 L U
  3. 50 f/1.8
  4. 70-200 f/4 L U

I have used:
  • 50mm f1/8
  • 70-200mm f2/8

Me join in the fun too ;)

For portraits, I use...
(i) Canon EF 50mm f1.8
(ii) Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro

Used to mount my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 for portraits too... but it's on the heavy side... need strong arms leh... ;p

70-200/2.8

ef 50mm f1.4 has good bokeh.
