It would really help if you told us what camera system you are using, and what your preferred walkabout style is. There are some people who want wide-angle, and others who consider 300mm as a walkabout lens.

If your hands is really quite shaky, IS will be useful. Since your budget is not high, i can only recommend u the EF-S 18-55 IS kit lens as a gd walkaround lens.

Which model are you using? Actually I find that 18-200mm/18-250mm are good for walkabout. Sony do comes with these lens.. but not sure whether Canon or Nikon comes with that.. Price varies also. Do check out from the sales forum.. some may be selling 2nd hand lens at quite a low price

Some ppl prefer a long range zoom from wide to tele like 18-250mm

Some ppl prefer a slightly long standard zoom like 16-105mm

Some prefer a normal standard zoom like 17-50mm


you might ask why have such a short standard zoom like 17-50mm?

Its because it is sharper than lenses like 18-205mm.


And usually it has a wide aperture too.

So you have to really decide, if you need focal length, sharpness, or wide aperture.

i am using canon 350d currently with 18-55 NON IS and 75-300 NON USM which i think i bought them without understand how IS actually enable a hand-shaker like me to be better in shots

given the opinion given here, i guess im recommended to stick to my lens.
maybe should get a flash instead. just wanting to get something for my camera since i alraedy had that amount of money to spare

You'll never go wrong with a 50mm prime lens for walkabout. Good price + sharp photos + quick lens. :thumbsup:

Allows you to focus quickly and capture moments which you may miss if trying to zoom + focus with a tele.

depends on what you need...ignoring stabilization, i would recommend getting a 18-105mm VR + Nikon to Canon adapter. the cheaper adapters require manual focusing but the range is pretty good for a walkabout lens.

plus having the adapter means you can use whatever Nikon has to offer as well.

why get the nikkor when canon has an excellent 17-85 IS?

both should be more than $400 though..

17-85 IS close to $900 1st hand.

can get the 18-105 for about $300 average at BnS.

The 17-85 can be had for about $400 in the BnS forums. Much as I like the newer kit lens (18-55mm IS), the TS is using the older, non-IS version, which sucks optically. I believe an 18-55mm IS can be found cheap on the BnS section as well.

TS: IS is nice, but if you're struggling at the 18-55mm range, then you should also work on your handholding technique, it's not just using your hands, but positioning your body for maximum stability.
