What kind of photographic techique is this ?

I recently read the June 2003 Issue of CAR, amazed with the level of photography in it everytime I engross myself in it. There were some photos that have extremely strong contrast and very bold colours. Its something like using PS to crank up the contrast, and reduce the colour (by a massive margin). Any idea is this a trait of any film out there, or some kind of photo technique ? Very Contrasty, lack of colour (nearer B/W but not quite there). I'm lazy to scan a pic to show u guys, but let me know if you really wanna see it.

some suggestions...

use medium format cam,
use a velvia 50 medium format film... hehehe
then scan in the pic, using a good scanner of cos...

use Photoshop to adust the color balance.
the contrast balance

if it's B&W, they probably just used a very hard grade of paper...

sounds like slide film going through C41 (print process)
