What is vignetting?

Pardon my ignorance, but what is vignetting? Is it the block portion of the image caused by the use of certain lens like a telephoto?

It refers to the darkening of the corners of an image, sometimes to the point where it's totally black. And yes, you just gave an example of vignetting.
