I saw SIGMA 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro has a minimum focusing distance of 40 cm.

Means that you can actually shoot Macro with this lens.:)

shoot at 40cm away? dun think good enough

Macro for these non-specialised lenses means that they are able to focus closer than the other lenses And with a longer focal length, it can have a macro effect on the subject but normally the macro ratio is still pretty poor of about 1:3 or 1:4

Only dedicated macro lenses can give you ratios of 1:1 or better.

Mount your camera on a tripod. Set your camera and lenses to fully manual. You can get close to about 15-20cm away from subject.;)

Does this mean the function of the lense is the same, eg 100mm Macro and 100mm are the same?

Nope... a 100mm lens may not be able to focus close. A 100mm macro would be able to focus much closer at say 20-30cm from the image plane. A normal lens may only be able to do so at a distance of say 50cm onwards...

So it means apart from being able to focus at much closer distance, all are the same?

No, the macro ratio is different too.

The Nikkor version doesn't advertise itself as a macro, even though it has a fixed focusing distance of 38cm (if I remember correctly) across the focal length...

Focusing distance is shorter for manual.

So am I correct to say Sigma is wrong here?

It's just an advertising ploy... plus the magnification ratios are normally pretty bad too

Minimum focusing distance is the closest distance you stand away from your subject before you can get your subject to be in focus .when taking it..;)
