What is the different between 28mm len from 18-105mm kit len

Hi,

Like to check what is the different between a fix len of 28mm and a kit len of 18-105mm.

Can we adjust the kit len to 28mm and use it to shoot instead of using the fix 28mm len?

Beside the different of aperture, what is the effect a 28mm can have and not the kit len?

Just like to get an ideas of the different.

28 gives you wider aperture. And that alone is a lot of difference.

The 28mm probably gives you better image quality and sharpness as well.

There is no such thing as "len". It's "lens" for singular, "lenses" for plural.

Yes, you can set your kit lens to 28mm and get a similar field of view as the 28mm prime lens. However, at 28mm, the 28mm prime lens will usually have a sharper edge to edge image compared to a zoom lens, as the whole lens was optimized for only that one focal length.

First off... it is Lens and not Len.

Second, fix focal lens or prime lens normally had less elements in it which will translate to better sharpness of the lens normally (of course there are really bad prime lenses around too). Then the aperture value is different and this is a very very important difference because it actually control the DOF in your picture.

Then you should look at the design of the aperture blades of both lens... and I believe there are difference too.

Finally... a 28mm prime lens is selling cheaper than a 24-105mm (if you purchase the lens separately).

The good folks here have already explained the technical details.

You can easily obtain a prime lens and a zoom lens, such as those that you suggested, and do exactly as you imagined, and try to discern the difference.

If there is no perceivable difference by you, then there is no difference. I suspect that it would be painfully obvious though.

I am using the 28mm f1.8, wide aperature range, better bokeh, moisture/dust seal and M/A when compared with 18-105mm f3.5-5.6

TS is referring to kit lens 18-105mm, and he is a Nikon user. Nikon don't have 24-105 lens.
