I hear these two terms come up very frequently when watching some friends take shots for magazines in a studio environment. Exactly what are these two tools and what do they do?

Thanks!

Soft Box : What you end up with when you dunk a cardbox box into the sea.

Barn Doors : The doors of a barn.

ok ok, the correct ones:

Softbox: The very large diffuser fitted over a flash unit to help soften and increase the area of light. This gives a very soft, diffuse effect. (3rd from left)

Barndoors : The metal flaps around a light which controls how wide/narrow the dispersion is. Usually found on video lights. (2nd from left)
