In regards to the recent comotion abt students watching porn, let share our views on this.

i think the whole issues is over blown. the principal and the teachers of the school are really stupid.
The more you control, the more the students will retaliate..

In fact, whats wrg with porn?

LOL

no flamming pls..

paisey: title shd be: wat if u catch yr kids watching porn?

watch with him and educate him.

be honest i watch it myself when i was very young. it is better to have a laugh off with your son than play a cat and mouse game with them.

teach him the boundary of what is right and what is wrong. (Eg. rape, premaritial sex)

be honest to ourselves.

Hmm, i think im more conservative then..
I think that porn 'cheapens' the human body and devalues sex.

Through the internet, it has almost been inevitable that we get exposed to pornography, but we should definitely not be seen advocating it to our kids. I think pornography when seen by an adult and when seen by a hormone raging teenager bears different consequences. There is often a misconception of if you cant stop him, then allow him. If your kid wants to see porn, it should never be from his parents.

Sex education can be achieved in many ways but definitely not through porn..

Hmm, but then again, these are but my views.. :D

wow i'd love to be your child ...you're so liberal

but having said that, IMO, porn is not right esp for kids and even more so when it happened in an educational institution.

i'd not mind allowing kids to watch some movies where there were some love making scenes or scenes involving sex (where the sexual content has "meaning" or injects realism) but porn is altogether different. porn is an exploitative commercial thing that is nothing but 'that' - and in many cases just senseless acts of 'that'.

however, i feel that the school concerned should have settled it in private between the school and parents and not involve the police.

Yeah... I felt they sounded silly when I read it. But Singapore is basically still in Victorian times. It's like the authorities ban this and that making themselves look like they haven't had sex themselves.

I really don't know how effective all these bans are. Just a couple of months back, I remember reading a survey done on teenagers and young adults. A good proportion have lost their virginity by the time they 21 and I believe teenage abortions are on the rise here. The one that caught my attention was this young girl from a so-called top all-girls sec school who had sex b4. According to the reporter, she was bespectacled and carried some books -- not the type you'd think would sleep around with boys. Her remarks suggested "What's the big deal??!"

The bottomline is, the more you prevent it forcefully, the more curious the mind gets and the more they wanna explore. Can't believe certain TV programs that are banned/censored or placed late at night just because of some little adult language content that does not even border on the 'F' word that you commonly get in Hollywood PG movies these days.

What we seriously lack is education with knowledge. Over here, I find authorities like to punish, fine and impose pain on people in the blind hope that they will not repeat whatever is not allowed in the local society. That's what I call education without reason or knowledge. For eg, how does punishing the students who owned the porn VCDs make them realize what they did was wrong? Why is it wrong anyway? Would it not motivate them to be more discreet the next time they wish to watch it again? You think these kids undergoing puberty will stop just because some dorky authority told them it's WRONG? DUH!!

This is just a simple matter of educating the students involved. Why get the police and punish the students? What wrong have they done? It's not watching porn that is wrong. If so, then most adults have done wrong!! It's the implication of watching it at a young age. This has to be explained to the students. IMO, they did no wrong. They just need to be PROPERLY educated. Which unfortunately, doesn't usually happen here where such issues are concerned.

I honestly don't know what I would do at this point. My kids are 2, 4 and 6 yrs. old, so I have some time to think about it, and read the answers here for pointers :)

Good question......

I guess...the restrictions and non education...on this areas make kids become curious.

I knowa relative who went to UK with her family and kids.....and as you know there are some adult channels there....happened that one evening one of the kids happen to surf to this channel...they watched it as a family for "teaching" purpose and as parents, they explained to the kids of the wrong doing in a senssible way....and guess what....the kids becomes aware of such thing and they know automatically to avoid it the next time round.....

Its hard to get these kind of open minded parents.....no open minded to let you watch them all...but open minded in education.....

rgds,
me

Since i am not married ... I try to imagine what i will do!!!
I will slap him left and right ....
say "stupid, when i watch porn at ur age, I was never caught!!!"

Watch with him and educate him ...
to evaluate the porn!!!

confiscate the disc and keep it for his father... (did i say his father)
watch it myself later

Ignore him ...
until i finish the disc!!!

In the name of fun ... please forgive me!!!

My son is 2 plus now so Nemo is definitely the healthier choice for him at this age :)

to be frank, 1 decade ago when I am still a student in college, we also do such thing (ie. watching porn movie together and laugh it off) but we are smart enough not to bring it to school, these guy just not too tactical ......
reason why we do it then is really just for the fun and thrill,
think the more we control it, the more people wanna watch it,
if its such a big hooha now and can't image what happened if we got caught then....

i think it it should be ok if they only watch and not try and thing funny on themselves.....To say the truth although the govt has put ban on these kind of porn things but tell me honestly who has never ever "stole a peek" on these things.....I dare say that during my secondary school day, my friend and I got these sourse of stuff from my classmate from taiwan and we sometimes do gather at his house in the afternoon to steal a peek.

if you really catch you kid watching porn...I think the best way out is to sit down and have a good talk with him and educate him about sex coz its just a matter of time sooner or later in his/her part of life that they need to do it and teach their kid about it.

Can you imagine two married couples inside their bedroom wanting to having sex to produce kids but do not know how to have sexual contact or where to start and where to "poke" thing around?

There are a few factors to consider here:

1. Age of the kid, my acceptance is definately after Sec 4!
2. Boy or Gal, boy maybe can be a LITTLE liberal before Sec 4, gal definatley after.
3. Definately cannot be addicted. Experience parents like us can tell this.

No matter what, kids MUST not be allowed to go into this prono things, coz school education is still the most important and healthy hobbies should be encouraged. Photography, sports, social activites, etc... these are the better choices. I think kids go into prono is probably the parents are not too close to them and they are given too much freedom..... maybe i m just old-fashion. If one really loves and cares your kids, these kids will always be very open to you. But remember it's quality time i m referring.

I feel like you becoz the poor kids should be given a second chance, maybe like public canning in the auditorium, etc..
But in Singapore the law is very strict and rigid and the school and the principal are caught in this situation, becoz the uncensored vcd is considered illegal and unlawful and anyone who owned one is already breaking the law. So if the school does not report this, then technically the school has broken the law. In this kiasu society, do you think the principal wants to risk his ricebowl and take the law into his own hand? Also, maybe the kids are distributing and acting as the runners for the syndicates for the uncensored vcds and as such the police need to go into details which are not available to us.
As such, even though it appears inhuman and unfair, i think the school has done its part and let leave it to the police. Hopefully all the other kids can learn sth from this case. Trust me, kids SHOULD not be allowed to view uncensored movies! It's nonsense about all this hormone thingy when u r still a kid.

cool it , its just porn, tell them properly the reel life and real life and chat with your kids, i think its better then. Then we can swap disks later hahahaha! :bsmilie:

Well, actually Sg has quite a lot of grey area in terms of law. Kinda like a do whatever u want but dun get caught thing :bsmilie: Pirated cds, illegal hawkers, and even chewing gums.....I'm not too sure of the legal age of marriage, but it seems to be below 21 (with parental consent) rite? So does that mean u can actually get married and have sex with ur wife and not be able to watch rA movies ??:dunno:

the school should have called the student's parents and discussed first, instead of going straight to the police...and made the student stood for 7hrs without food? this is mis-treatment.

possessing pornographic materials is a jailable offence, but i think for students, they should be at least given a second chance...

too rigid...a school without "ren ching"

Since its a jailalbe offence, it shows how serious it is rite? If a kid steals or kills someone are you gonna give the child a second chance?

In view of this, Asians are the more conservative ones and therefore sex issues are more of a hush-hush, learn by watching others matter.
Porn, hard or soft is still something of secret door which many youngsters/ adults still get their kicks from in secrecy.

My view is that sex education need not neccessary be related to watching porn, even current sitcoms/dramas/ movies have at least 1 sex scene in them. Thru these, we can still educate the younger ones without having to make any reference to porn stuff :)

Didn't read the news actually, but what i heard from the radio is that the school never went straight to the police. It was one of the student developed some gastric problem, need to be sent to hospital which eventually police were notified. Then they went to the school to investigate.
