I read this paragraph online, what's the hardware for this?

Focusing Stage

The normal method of getting a subject in focus during macro work is to adjust the lens to the approximate focus point and then move the camera / lens backwards and forwards to achieve optimum focus. This is a real pain if the camera is on a tripod! The answer is a macro-focusing stage: this holds the camera and itself is mounted onto the tripod. Knobs then allow you to move the camera/lens smoothly forwards and backwards and also from side to side.

It is something like a knurl knob, turning it will cause the slide to move?

Quite commonly seen on machine fitted with vision system. Can DIY easily.

I don't think it is a focusing rail. It looks likes part of a QTVR type setup.

The rail is there so you can adjust the camera to find the nodal point of the lens for VR photography.

You are correct. After re-reading the original post, I just noticed about the ability of this hardware to move from side to side.

nah, i think my velbon also can move front, back, side to side...

or get 2 of the manfrotto macro rail, i read the documentation before, if u combine 2, then i can do X-Y already.. instead of single axis... for QTVR its X-Y-Z + Rotation. or something liddat...
