just got my 300D last month and i'm on a tight budget for a flash as the built in one just doesnt do it for me. any decent flash i can get for around $200?

vivitar 285hv.. cheap powerful and good!

i agree that u should pay around 50 more for a second hand 420ex

420ex brandnew = 330 bucks

Do you know if the Canon 380EX sync (TTL) with your 300D?
If it does, i have one that is just sitting out in my dry cabinet, it does not sync with my 10D and I have not used it since I bought it sometime back.
I believe I still have all the original packaging and stuff around.
(It' so new I can still smell it, lolz)

If you're intersted, we can discuss further ;)
Cheers

the EX series are all ETTL, not sure what you mean by not sync with the 10D, maybe the flash is faulty?

Ooops, guess I used the wrong term there
Just did a little reading the manual again, the specific reads - "with TTL and A-TTL autoflash Speedlites, the flash will not fire in the TTL or A-TTL autoflash mode".

(it's just that the 380EX model was not recommended for E-TTL use with the 10D, only the 550EX model is recommended)

But then again I have not tried using it with the 10D either :sweatsm:

so does 380ex have E-TTL? what manual are you reading? 10d or 380ex?

I interested to know as I'm shopping for 2nd hand canon flash.

380ex has ETTL because it can do high speed sync

It does?
Guess I should try it on a few test shots then... :embrass:

Snowcrash - I was reading the 10D manual. :p
Dunno why they only recommeded the 550ex...
