what film to bring to melbourne?

hi all,

i'll be going melbourne end of the month. any recommendations of what film to bring?

it's going to be a 6 days self-drive trip, taking the route of great ocean towards lorne, but dunno where to make the turn and then where else...

my colleague advised against going to philips island, saying that the time taken to travel is not worth the trip to see "staged" parading of penguins.

well .... i don't know about what film to bring ... but i guess one of the places you shouldn't really miss is Tesselaars Tulip Farm. Its over at dandenong, and although is not really that impressive tulip farm, you still can get fantastic shots, esp in spring.

I can't comment on the philip island thing, having been there 3 times. The penguin parade is rather overrated. However, if you wish to shoot koalas, thats a good place to go. They have a koala sanctuary there, with unfenced "bridges" go up to tree level and you can see koalas sleeping/hugging the trees as close as at an arms length.

Think you can bring an asortment of films since you are undecided. Go with ISO 200 and 400 films. SHoudl be able to cover most situations already.

Perhaps include a couple of slide film for those great scenic landscapes on the way?

for negatives. fuji reala100. the best color negative film in my opinion. dont need so much speed in bright sunny australia.
if on low buget and need more speed at night, use fuji superia 100, 200 or 400.

use provia or velvia if you want to shoot slides.

go and shoot the 12 apostiles at all times of the day. sunrise, sunset, midday, night????? hehe
it makes a great landscape subject. pray that the lighting that day is favourable.

go Grampians! it's 'along' the way of ocean road. juz need a detour somewhere. towards the end of ocean road, there is a small town, u will be able to ask for direction there! along the entry of grampians, there are a few motel. the caravan motel is an interesting choice! u might want to try but it gets cold in the middle of the nite. hence not so sure u want to take the challenge in this season. along the ocean road & city freeway drive, you should pass by lavender farm ( but this is not the season) and Ballarat - a golden mine town. use to be a capital (if not wrong) of Australia at that period of time. do a quick drop by. It's pretty "cowboy" kind of environment. - interesting for a change through! check out the schedule fr tourism office, think they have night performance every thur nite.

another good place to visit will be muray river. something like Mississippi river in states. on good days, you will get lovely sunset! but with yr 6 days trip, doubt u can make it to this place.

if U like trekking, go to Wilson prom. a nice place for photography deep in trek. both wilson & Muray are on another end of victoria

other than these few places there are ofcourse nearer to mel. the yarra valley for wine, the river place for arts, food & casino and perhaps the dangdong for a train ride into the rainforest.

lastly, since u driving, bring along a tripod! ASA 200 will be good for general photography.

Oh yes! there is a small eating house in a small lane beside the state library. the crab noodle there is yammy...

The pengiun show at Phillip Island is pretty much commercialised. You really may skip that part in your trip. The consolation is that no photography is permitted there!

Correction. No flash photography allowed on Philip Island.
If going to Philip Island, suggest Kodak ASA 1600. Film allowed u to push upto 2 (ie ASA at 3200 or 6400). So that under limited lighting, some shots can turn up.
Also inform film developer the film has been push to 1 or 2 for developing.

agree! Did a melbourne to adelaide trip 2 years back n stopped at this little town called Halls Gap. We stayed at the YHA Eco Hostel, very clean and comfy, for a few days and hiked up the Grampians. Some great views up there. Literally stood at the edge of cliffs with several hundred feet drops. Takes about a few hrs to hike up but worth the effort.

as for Philip Island...i was there too. interesting sight...but the penguins' arrival were definitely not "staged". They return from sea after a day of fishing just after dusk. waited for quite a while b4 they came up to shore.

weather should be quite nice now..as it is the middle of spring. flowers jus starting to bloom. 200 neg or slide film wud be quite sufficient.

thanks darrel, i'll keep in mind the tulip farm. my friend loves tulip, it's a good idea.

coke and showtime, i'm trying not to bring an assortment of films cos i'm not one who takes a roll within hours, and i really dislike changing films halfway. still considering if i should bring slides. but yes, will go for fuji.

jtnet, grampians's a must go? is it far? the further places may be out of question due to the time restrictions. heh, the eating house sounds good. thanks!

ernest, looks like i won't be taking penguin photos then, cos my lens are slow to add on to the difficulty.

gnail, edge of cliffs? makes my legs turn jelly. will keep in mind Halls Gap and hiking. hmm, ya, i may go for 200... a compromise heh.

Yup, no flash photography, and it'll be rather dark by the time you see anything. Anyway I think you'll be quite far away and the action rather uninteresting. Both NZ dunedin and SA cape town area will have much more interesting oppotunity to see Penguins, so suggest you give it a miss.

it's hard to say that u must or need not go! depends on the kind of holidays & attraction u like! if u ask me, i'll say it's worth the effort!
trip from ocean road to Grampians abt another hour to 2 extra !-at most!

the usual way i used to travel is to go ocean road first, then head down to grampians, drive around the driving spot, stay over a nite then a easy hike the next morning before heading back to mel. on the wayback to mel, , u can ofcourse drop by ballarat town (but not so worth staying over nite ) & other minor attractions along the way!

Hall Gaps is part of grampians. but u can drive to the nearest point + another 20 to 25 mins easy trek! this place got good setting lights on good days!

Oh yes! don forget the victoria nite market on wednesday nite (confirm the time incase change alreadi) there will be loads of handi craft for sale! at times there are hot -air ballons for ride which come ex- abt A$ 100 to 200 (around) . then again, it's not really a pity if miss this nite market but be sure u go for the usual day market.

another fre-mart to visit will be st kilidas mart on sunday (ends 4pm) personally, i like this mart very much. it's "along" st kilidas beach.
