what does the number on the lens mean?

Have been looking around in the forum and have been quite confuse on the numbers when someone is talking about the lens... eg Sigma 70-300mm what does the 70-300mm means? The focal length that this lens can do? Hope someone can help.. thanks!

Yes.

It is called zoom lens. Start from 70mm (consider as short tele) and end at 300mm (consider as long tele).
