Ok i know I suck at composing my photos but here's my 1 cent.
I think there are two ways to compose pictures.
One is the scientific way which includes the rule of thirds, the spiral, the S shape, and shapes and lines that appeal to our eye and mind.
The other way may be the Story way. If the story, or relationship between elements and subjects in the picture, is the most interesting thing in the picture, then the composition doesn't have to follow the typical scientific rules or approach. And as long as each of the elements or subjects in the picture fully show their role in the relationship/story, then the typical compositional rules can take a back seat.

nothing, i compose any way i like. no rules
for me, its like telling the story of why i took the photo.

the way the elements of the image are arranged in relation to one another... (hehe, this kind of answer macam not an answer hor)
techically speaking:
1) allows room for cropping to be done later for pre-press material.
2) it help to create dynamism in a picture.
3) it can be used to emphase or hide certain details for more effective communication.
artistically speaking:
1) it cheapens or elevate the piece of work.
2) it pleases or irritates your eyes.
Good news is that if uses cleverly, a truely beautiful piece or ART is form.
Bad new is that if you uses it blindly, a so-so or boring piece of CRAFT is form.

Something I force my students to do every 2 weeks during English class.
My idea of composition is very formulaic:
Rule of thirds, check edges, foreground and background for distractions, fire away!
Maybe will alter shooting height to get differing angles.
I guess the main idea is to make a scene look "nice" with focus on a main subject (not always easy to do/spot), and to create a new perspective of a place that's seen by many a thousand times over (again, not easy).

Composition to me, is to capture the moment of action/scene/emotions in a way such
that when anyone else looks at the picture years later, it would invoke the same feelings and appreciation as if they are on the same spot.

The only rule i apply so far is the "golden ratio".

rules are made to be broken ... (but not by fools)
to many normal (good, decent) photo that follow rules ... make the photographer wanna go for something can make a :bigeyes: rather than a :thumbsup:
As to speak of rule of 3rd, i attempted to go against it sometimes while making sure getting something very very center, symestrical ... (cropping might involves)
