What does 35mm means?

isn't 35mm the width of the negative (or the diagonal?) can't remmeber which...go take ruler n measure :p
 

hi, i dunno if its true but i have heard 35 mm format being called 'leica' format....... don't really know if it is in anyway related to the camera maker LEICA.
Or did LEICA come out with the format????? :D

It's 24mm by 36mm, diagonal is 43mm.
