What does 35mm means?

Quick! Anyone remember what does 35mm means? What was it originated from?

hi, i dunno if its true but i have heard 35 mm format being called 'leica' format....... don't really know if it is in anyway related to the camera maker LEICA.
Or did LEICA come out with the format?????

It's 24mm by 36mm, diagonal is 43mm.
