omg, buying a 'pro-range' DSLR with a 3rd-party battery grip. I'm definitely not anti 3rd-party lenses, but i wouldn't buy 3rd-party battery grips

As for the lenses, heard some good reviews regarding the Sigma somewhere in this forum ;) (haven't been following news of the Tammy though)

I'm using third party grip on 400D, the buttons are certainly not as nice as the original.. So if you can, I agree with Daedelus, yo ushould get thge original grip, but give it a try first before you decide - might just suits you.

i would suggest that you spend more on good glass -- the D300 is capable of very high resolution; don't cripple it with so-so superzooms.

Are you using this camera as a travelling cam?
Or other specific uses?
the 18-270 VC is good if you are lazy to change lens and accept reasonable normal quality of pictures provided you don't do pixel peep.
Add on a SB900 flash to complete your setup.

if not in the hurry, why not wait? It will be cheaper 6mths later when you need it.

Yah, if can wait, then wait. later you will then only need to decide between D400 and D500 packages as you consider if you should wait a while more for the by then rumoured D600. You would save alot you know, cos by then you would not have spent a single cent as you wait and marvel at the photos others are taking...

In my opinion, just get the D300 body and buy a used Nikon 18-70 or 18-135. A used body is sold for around $1800 on B&S. Forget about the 3rd party grip, with D300 the battery power is good enough without grip. If it's 3rd party battery, D300 doesn't work great with them. Some have been known to work but still others that worked, have certain issues after using (I had to return mine).

save yr headaches on the 3rd party battery + grip for the moment. as its still "new". wait till the next replacement then maybe the 3rd party products will stablise on D300.
