But I'd never seen a black-coloured reflector used in portraits. Typically, gold, silver, white. Never black.

Yes, there is, most reflector is introduce light, the black one is introduce shallow or call it subtract light.

Btw what she is holding is not a reflector and it wouldn’t serve any purpose at that area.
