Hi,

I just got my laptop loaded with Windows 7.

I would like to ask CSmembers what are the key software we should have in our laptop for photoediting, backup, work, etc

In my mind, this is what I intend to have but not sure what is the best
1. Antivirus - wonder what brand is reliable and wont crash PC
2. Microsoft Office 2007 (for work)
3. Currently I have a free photoshop lightroom and photoshop element
4. Any other softwares to recommend ?

1) GData - German product, double engine
2) Not essential, OpenOffice does the same without license costs
3) There is no free Lightroom version. Get a license key.
4) IrfanView for quick image browsing; Firefox; Secunia PSI; Thunderbird; CDBurner; AlwaySync for backups.

dunno what's on windows 7 but currently i have:
1. photoshop cs4
2. norton ghost to restore your desktop
3. nero pro to burn
4. skype

- AVG (anti-virus)
- KeyScrambler (anti-keylogger)
- cCleaner
- Flickr Uploadr
- Google Chrome (FTW!)

Photoshop CS4
NOD32
Office 2010 Beta
Windows Live Messenger

:bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

  1. Photoshop CS4
  2. Office 2007
  3. NOD32
  4. DLink IP Surveillance
  5. Google Chrome
  6. Newsgroup Application
  7. MSN Messenger

1. Office 2007
2. Paint.NET
3. Photoscape
4. Firefox
5. Winamp + Tune in to 1.FM

:p :p :p

On my desktop...

1) still on office 2003 as too used to the interface. You can use Open Office(Free) + Thunderbird(Free) for office suite + email client.
2) Avast Antivirus (free)
3) IrfanView image viewer (free)
4) 7-zip file compressor (free)
5) CutePDF writer (free)
6) K-lite mega codec pack to watch video (free)
7) MSN messenger and skype (free)
8) CDburnerXP (free)
9) Canon ZoomBrowser and DPP (not free but comes with camera)
10) KuWoo music box , PPSLive for entertainment (free)
11) Lightroom 2, PS4 for photo (not free) , you can use Picasa(Free) + Gimp(Free) but I prefer the former combo.
12) Acronis TrueImage Desktop (not free)
13) Stellar Phoenix Data recovery (not free)
14) Blue Coat's K9 web protection for kids content filtering (free)
15) Pinnacle Studio for video editing (not free)
16) AVI video convertor for video format conversion (not free)

I think that's about it. Most software can be free. Only some specialized software needs to be purchased.

thanks guys, keep in coming...in fact, it would be good to share what we have so that we can have a feel of what most of our laptop / pc are running...in fact some of you have suggested some free apps, I have already start to source for the software...thanks guys...

I use firefox, ACDSee 3.0 for basic photo editing and organising (IMO much better than Adobe Lightroom), Adobe Photoshop CS4 for the heavy editing...and a rapidshare account (using Jdownloader for client software) for the...um...other stuff with Utorrent for backup. AVG free for anti-virus

Just a question, what is the better photo organiser we can use ? I have a lot of photos in folders and looking for good photo organiser My colleague told me to try lightroom but what other softwares do you all recommend ?

seriously, try ACDSee Pro 3.0. there is a free demo version i think. or Picasa which is free from google

so far i find the bundled Adobe Bridge pretty good (bundled with CS4). I used to be on Lightroom 2 but the more I use it the more I find myself getting back to the familiar CS4 workspace.

These softwares are in my pc, either oftenly used or at certain times:

1.Photoshop CS4
2.Lightroom 2
3.Chrome, Firefox and IE
4.Avast antivirus free edition
5.uTorrent
6.Adobe - reader
7.Cutepdf
8.Norton Ghost
9.Nero
10.Noise Ninja
11.Photomatix
12.Msn

photoshop CS4
lightroom
adium
keynote
firefox
ms office

Photoshop CS4
Photomatix Pro
Niksoftware suite for CS4
Adobe Bridge
iTunes
Microsoft office suite
Pinnacle Studios
iMovie
Google Chrome/Safari
Skype

Need advice here...

Do you backup your photos to at least 2 hard disks and what software do you use to sync them. I tried with a sw call goodsync pro but alamak, I dont know what the software did but some photos were lost !!!

What other good software do you recommend ?

I backup to 2 different external hard drives, via my own logon/logoff script. It's pretty easy, just google "robocopy" or "xcopy" commands.
