It is indeed a fact that there are challenges facing IT.
However real issues will have to depend on the time and
level you are in. Would you have realised the question is on
the intense challenges. It will not be of significant if you are
not aware of the purpose of IT and its consequences. What is
the real purpose of IT then and what it has done to humanity?
Here are the quotes from some of the replies:

Correct one of the purpose of living is to keep moving forward, to
do better and to specialize. So it the same in every other industry.

This will be a divine gift if these IT people can produce such
applications for the betterment of mankind and its environment.
One of the thing should be to make all humans to be able to live in
better, healthier, happier and in a more harmonious condition.
"Users want everything fast fast.
Management want everything cheap cheap....and still fast fast".
It is natural for man to keep on pressing for speed in doing every
task and at the same time to do it at lower cost. So people who
can create and produce such will survive. There will be those who
don't mind products or services of a lower quality provided they
are paying less.

People are putting on their thinking caps 24 hours a day to come out
with such plans...to keep reducing cost. This is a measure you have
to take in order to compete effectively and to survive.

Pehaps it would benefit readers if you kindly give more details on
this massive online system you are mentioning. This is where the
challenges are but you are talking about taking a much longer time
to do the same thing. I think you mean the opposite, that is to be
able to do the same task at a shorter time?

True to the dot! However most are still sleeping or are in their
wild dreams of not getting a rotton pay with their IT knowledge.
Those who can change to suit the circumstances will survive.

Another real vision again. IT is all around us and everything is almost
connected from the plain drive in a motor vehicle to putting on a jet
shoe for easy walking. If the mindset is only for looking at what is
in front of you, then the keyboard is just for hammering a few keys.

The world needs thousands of people who are talented like you but
make sure the end results is not to destroy fellow humans.

Well, there will be different level of knowledge and vision when you
are still 24 years old and a student. Most likely, your thoughts are
channelled to passing your examinations first. IT with human
interactivity seems to be a waste of human efforts. Would there be
such inventions in the future?
"IT is a damn 'pai than' industry. With people of varying levels of competency entering the market daily, cheaper, etc. Within no time, your knowledge is obsolete & so are you... Not to mention fixing bugs, data patching, etc."
You are to get better and better each day and year. The world will
never stops advancing as long as there are humans living. So when
you want to take a rest or rest others will push you away and take
the lead. Once you know your knowledgeis obsolete you got to get
your brain working again and make sure this time it will work into
other more complex areas you have never dream before.

It is a fact you are! People who are fearful of IT are always negative
in their thoughts and these are influential. When your mindset is
more positive you do things more efficently. There is always a
reason why some humans are known as "superhumans" It is a
reality for those who admit that they are not.

All technology is connected in a small or big way with IT.

This can be a reality in time to come. All we need is to put more
people with this same concept in a round table to put the plan to
fruition. This is indeed one of the intense challenges. I would guess
if more such people is able to work unselfishly and prosper together
the dreams will come true in perhaps 20 to 50 years from 2006.

I would suggest that the reality in IT is to make this world a
better place to live in.
More green environment, preservation of wildlife, no pollution
in the air or water, less deadly diseases and less destructive
behavior of man's nature.
