what are scouting lens?

i recently came across a video about camera stuff...and there was this part where the guy said that he uses this particular lens for "scouting" may i know what is the meaning of a scouting lens?

the guy shld be chase jarvis right? i think he uses the 18-200 as a general purpose zoom to take snapshots for reference before he does the actual shoot.

Generally, it refers to a lower powered lens esp. when it's used together with telescopes, etc...

This is to give you a preview and aim point for the more powerful tele lenses.

A lens that has a large range like 18-200 (cant rem what was in the video)

So that you can just walk around and test what focal lengths you will need for whicheve shots, then later change to specific (usually higher quality) lens to take the final product.
