creampuff said that this is the 4th edition of the Vivitar S1 70-210mm and based on the serial no. it's made by cosina (58mm). (1st-kiron (67mm), 2nd-tokina (62mm), 3rd-komin) From the result I get, it's pretty much similar to that produced by Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6, except it is f2.8-f4. It's no prime or macro lens, so can't compare sharpness.;) The 1:2.5 macro, 210mm (315mm) & f2.8 makes it a sweet deal at a small price.:D Only issue I have is no hood included in the standard package.

The shots are taken at f2.8-f4, dragonfly & fly are taken at f8
In adobe raw, auto exposure - 50% & the saturation by 28.
The cropped insert is 100% with no PP.
255,0.3,0 USM is applied on the resized image.

Nice testing shots again. Most S1 lenses are quite good in their days.

One thing about your photos though, 255,0.3,0 USM is too much for resized photos. I can see the over sharpening effect in the first three. Next time you can give this combo a try (based on the photo size you posted here):

first: 80, 0.3, 0
then:15, 5.0, 0

If the result doesn't look natural, just reduce the 5.0 to 3.0 or 4.0 in the second run.

Give it a try and let me know what you think ;)

I agree with you they are over sharpen. But as usual too lazy, as the sharpening is in my auto action. :bsmilie: I'll do 1 with your setting for the dragonfly.

Standard moderate sharpening (USM 255, 0.3, 0)

fengwei's sharpening (USM 80,0.3,0 + 15, 5, 0)

fengwei your sharpening is more tone down compare to the standard one. Maybe on a single subject, not much can be seen. But on shots like the last 3, your sharpening will be much suitable.

Thanks for sharing, I'd benifit from it (in my auto sharpen:bsmilie: ) I believe others here will benifit from it too:thumbsup:

feel not very good but can not tell what's the problem.

Vivitar S1 lenses are generally quite good glasses.
