Hmm
I am planning my grad trip to Hanoi-- Halong Bay-- Sapa from Sept 6 to maybe 1 week or more
but the tix putting me off from starting in Hanoi.. Tiger airways flies to Hanoi $320 return
Jetstar flies to HCM for less than $250 return i think..

Any other recommendations?
Recommended to take train? If scenery is nice, cabin is clean and safe i would not mind because i think the best class for train is around $30+ USD?

hi all

just came back frm vietnam from a backpacking trip. covered hanoi, sapa, hue, hoi an, hcm and mekong delta. for those asking whether covering sapa or halong bay, it is in the north so you guys wont be able to do that if u all just going to the south.

i will highly recommend the north more than the south cause they have more of the vietnamese distinct charm and definitely more rustic. If time permits, you guys can drop by sapa and halong bay as well. Sapa is really a beauty, cool air, nice clouds and sky, friendly and gregarious. Must do the village stay, my experience was that they served good home cooked food and nice rice wine. Wont know much about halong bay though cause my friend din want to go, but heard from fellow tourists that its not too bad as well.

As for Hcm to me is just like another bangkok, commercialised with shopping malls and events here and there. But perhaps u all can take a bus ride out to scenic places like mui ne and dalat.

For photo taking, i think it is best to ask for permission before u snapped as they can be easily offended and quite apprehensive at times. One of them wanted to whack my friend with some french baguette in hanoi. It was hilarious but we were glad that its not some other inflicting objects.

Weather wise, i guess it is pretty hot right now with ocassional rain here and there. So yea be prepared and buy more water.

Train to sapa, get the best and rest assured that its really clean and comfortable. Still gt TV inside wan man lol. We were quite taken aback but the sad thing is that more often than not you gt to get it from tour agencies. When we tried to grab it from the train station, they said its all sold out and heard that its very common for the agencies to buy in bulk unless u have friends over there or are able to grab the tickets earlier through other avenues.

As for the air tickets i have no idea hw come its so expensive right nw. I spent ard 200 sgd for both tickets, one from sg-hanoi, another from hcm-sing. Could be even cheaper for us if we had booked way earlier like ard 170+ sgd. Took tigerairways.

Just my 2cents worth.
Cheers!
