There is something for free - great nice photos in the gallery here that you can download as you like and they are free of charge. Well, some got watermark, others don't.

I don't put any watermark on my photos, but then, I only post my 2nd best and keep the best for myself.;) :bsmilie:

Samurai, just lock your thread, if you just want a PM :) just a suggestion to avoid unnecessary comments.

Yes please lock it ..the more you say something...the more you are open to attack

Eg: Is just pure editorial not for any advertisement, is more like a before after make over kind of stuff.

Most will say that you need good models for good editorial spread. Moreover, if its just a makeover type of shoot, how does it enhance the portfolio of the model? Where are the nice clothes (esp principal brands), good makeup, hair etc....

Then its back to which magazine are you from and can you show us your previous work here.....

Maybe a trip down to schools like polytechinics or a scouting mission in Orchard cineleisure or Hereen is more fruitful?
Tuck, I no need to worry much abt the stylist, make up artist & photographer they are prof & good.

Will lock this thread but let me figure out first.

Thanks

For a samurai (or was it ninja), if they're faced with great disgrace, they'd commit harakiri.

Oops. Just remembered this was about seeking people hopefully wanting to build a "I've been published" credential, not martial arts...

Anyway it is impt for CS members to voice their comments to prevent ppl from being taken advantage of, esp newbie models. So we need ppl to comment on the pros and cons of this FOC assignments.

Nothing is free in Singapore, even ur progress package comes wif a price.

Okay people, I'm gonna wade in right here and say right off that that whole "magazines get lots of advertising dollars and therefore have heaps of money to spend" is complete and utter bullsh*t.

Let's clear this up: PUBLISHERS have magazines that earn a heap of money for the publisher, but not the magazine. Hardly any dollars feed back to the magazine, not even for big things like extra staff, designers etc. And certainly not for something trivial as a one-off photo-shoot for editorial.

In fact when you're on the magazine the money zips past you into the the big and deep pockets of the publisher and you never see a cent of it. Everyone thinks journalism is a game replete with wads of cash, but if I ask you to name a rich journo you can't.

Samurai is doing the right thing by being honest and upfront. It's a hey, we need a models for a shoot but we can't pay you, however you do get exposure which can boost your career deal. It's a chance to get exposure, and you're advising hopefuls to skip to opportunity because you feel it's exploitative?!? Hell, he even said he's giving the photos back to them after the editorial's complete.

Sounds like a good deal all-round, and trust me -- after a decade as a journalist and magazine editor I know that many, many cost-saving corners have to be cut to get things done. You think the magazines have heaps of money? You've got to be kidding!

Hmmm....I think you have given a very good account of the situation from the view of a/an journalist/editor. Kudos for letting many people know about the joy and constraints of working for a magazine.

I think most people are aware that the magazine is indeed a platform for asipiring models to get exposed and learn a thing or two to enhence their confidence and experience after completing the shoot. However, they are just concern that the magazine has not been named nor samples of the editorial teams previous work been given. They are just expressing their concern that fellow models and friends would not be able to have high quality pictures after the shoot. Moreover, if the models are free, what about the photographer, stylist, makeup/hair? It might be seen as unfair if everyone else is paid except the models. At least for the editors and journalist, you are paid a salary, so its really a job.

With regards to the finances of running a men's magazine, most people will say that for Men's magazines, the mode of operations is really and truly events and contests. These might even be more lucrative for smaller magazines than their advertising income. After the shoots, the local girls can be recruited to do events, enter a contest etc....since its a lot harder to find girls who are willing to enter contests nowadays. The models will get free drinks and entrance to many events/clubs and widen their network when they meet people in those events. They might also be paid a good sum of money doing such events. These are the things some of the magazines offer in return to the girls that has done free shoots for them. I dont believe people are so heartless until they use and discard although it has happened to many of us.

I have seen many positive things in this industry. Just need someone to show the samples after it has been published. I am sure everyone will be encouraged to see good photos for th e girls and hear of the assignments/ jobs and contacts they have gotten from the editor/magazine.

Cheers and have a nice week ahead

This isn't the first time I've heard of magazines looking for zero-cost models. I've also heard of magazines looking for zero-cost photographers, in return for a "Photo By" credit-line.

It does seem a lot more brutal, these days.

You know, there is so much condescending going on here that I feel obliged to add one more comment:

Being a "model" does not negate a person's intellect, so if they agree to a free photo shoot and are asked to do something against their own morals, then you know what? Speak up, and refuse. It's pretty bloody simple.

Honestly people, do you really think the homogenised and watered down magazine industry here in Singapore is that sleazy. You do? Wow, I feel sorry for you.

My advice is (as in all ventures in life): go for it if you feel it's safe, and take care of yourself. Doesn't matter what job, what assignment, but if you're a pretty girl as most of the "models" on this site are, then yes, you need to add some extra degree of knowledge and nous when you go along. I do not feel Samurai is fishing for gullible women at all, and his reluctance to name to magazine is very simple -- it's business, kids. And the mag industry is very, very cut-throat so his reluctance is par for the course.

Anyway, it's an opportunity. Make your own minds up.

The pysche of this forum is simply not in sync with industry needs.

After all, this is a HOBBYIST forum, made up of salon, exhibition photographer hopefuls.

We're here to appreciate and fraternise.

What Samurai wants is not best found here.

It's like walking into a western bar asking for sushi?

Samurai might be better off doing street casting and solve the problem quickly?

I've worked on feature length productions and this is how they save costs.

So Samurai, everyone has the right to fish, but this is a live bait pond when you're using artificial lures.

Chill everyone..
